Eishet Chayil

גְּמָלַ֣תְהוּ ט֣וֹב וְלֹא־רָ֑ע כֹּ֝֗ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּֽיה׃

She is good to him and never bad, all the days of her life.

Pesikta Rabbati 35:1

Loose translation of this Midrash, Hashem gathers the angels and says, "Come and let me tell you about the righteousness of my nation. I threw upon them in this world many sufferings and many pains and torturous experiences, in every generation and at every time, and my nation does not rebel and depart from me..."

This Midrash in Pesikta Rabbati, uses the proverb describing the goodness of the woman of valor as a response to a challenge presented by the angels earlier in the same source. In that earlier part of the Midrash, the angels wonder if Bnei Yisrael will not crumble in the face of tribulation like the Greeks, or Babylonians, or even alternatively if they are only strong when under suffering situations like slavery in Egypt, but when they taste peace will they then fall apart.

No says G-d to his ministering angels, my people are tested in many different ways throughout their lives for many years and they respond with goodness, introspection and even gratitude for their struggle.

This line in Eishet Chayil, represents the life of Chaya bas Yehoshua, a”h. Chana alluded to this at the levaya and at Shiva. That despite Hashem testing Mrs. Ringel with the deepest of nisyonot, she only responded as our Woman of Valor, with good and not bad, all the days of her life.

May we too, respond to our trials, with the dictum of this pasuk in mind and look inward and look outward and remain connected to our creator and to the goodness of giving and growth, all the days of our lives.
