§ Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi raises a contradiction between two verses. It is written: “And God made the two great lights” (Genesis 1:16), and it is also written in the same verse: “The greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night,” indicating that only one was great. Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi explains: When God first created the sun and the moon, they were equally bright. Then, the moon said before the Holy One, Blessed be He: Master of the Universe, is it possible for two kings to serve with one crown? One of us must be subservient to the other. God therefore said to her, i.e., the moon: If so, go and diminish yourself. She said before Him: Master of the Universe, since I said a correct observation before You, must I diminish myself? God said to her: As compensation, go and rule both during the day along with the sun and during the night. She said to Him: What is the greatness of shining alongside the sun? What use is a candle in the middle of the day? God said to her: Go; let the Jewish people count the days and years with you, and this will be your greatness. She said to Him: But the Jewish people will count with the sun as well, as it is impossible that they will not count seasons with it, as it is written: “And let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years” (Genesis 1:14). God said to her: Go; let righteous men be named after you. Just as you are called the lesser [hakatan] light, there will be Ya’akov HaKatan, i.e., Jacob our forefather (see Amos 7:2), Shmuel HaKatan the tanna, and David HaKatan, i.e., King David (see I Samuel 17:14). God saw that the moon was not comforted. The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Bring atonement for me, since I diminished the moon. The Gemara notes: And this is what Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish says: What is different about the goat offering of the New Moon, that it is stated with regard to it: “For the Lord” (Numbers 28:15)? The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: This goat shall be an atonement for Me for having diminished the size of the moon.

(ו) וַיַּעַשׂ אֱלֹהִים אֶת שְׁנֵי הַמְאוֹרוֹת הַגְּדוֹלִים וַיַּעַשׂ רִבּוּיָא וְתִקּוּנָא דְּכֹלָּא כְּדְקָא יְאוּת. אֶת שְׁנֵי הַמְאוֹרוֹת הַגְּדוֹלִים בְּקַדְמִיתָא בְּחִבּוּרָא חָדָא. רָזָא דָּא שְׁמָא שְׁלִים כְּחֲדָא יהו''ה אֱלהִים אַף עַל גַּב דְּלָא אִיהוּ בְּאִתְגַּלְּיָא אֶלָּא בְּאֹרַח סָתִים. ...

(ז) לָא אִתְיְישָׁב סִיהֲרָא לְגַבֵּי שִׁמְשָׁא. דָּא אַכְסִיף מִקַּמֵּי דָּא. סִיהֲרָא אָמְרָה (שיר השירים א׳:ז׳) אֵיכָה תִרְעֶה. שִׁמְשָׁא אָמְרָה (שם) אֵיכָה תַרְבִּיץ בַּצָּהֳרָיִם. שְׁרַגָא זְעֵירָא אֵיכְדֵין צָהִיר בַּצָּהֳרָיִם. (שם) שַׁלָּמָה אֶהיֶה כְּעוֹטְיָה אֵיכְדֵּין בְּכִסּוּפָא. כְּדֵין אַזְעִירַת גַרְמָהּ לְמֶהוֵי רֵישָׁא לְתַתָּאי. דִּכְתִיב צְאִי לָךְ בְּעִקְבֵי הַצֹּאן. אָמַר לָהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, זִילִי וְאַזְעִירִי גַרְמָךְ.

(ח) וּמִתַּמָּן לֵית לָהּ נְהוֹרָא בַּר מִשִּׁמְשָׁא. דִּבְקַדְמִיתָא הֲווּ יַתְבֵי כְּחֲדָא בְּשִׁקּוּלָא. לְבָתַר אַזְעִירַת גַּרְמָהּ בְּכָל אִנּוּן דַּרְגִּין דִּילָהּ, אַף עַל גַּב דְּאִיהִי רֵישָׁא עָלַיְיהוּ. דְּהָא לֵית אִתְּתָא בְּרִבּוּיָא בַּר בְּבַעֲלָהּ כְּחֲדָא. אֶת הַמָּאוֹר הַגָּדוֹל יהו''ה. וְאֶת הַמָּאוֹר הַקָּטָן אֱלֹהִי''ם סוֹף כָּל דַּרְגִּין סוֹפָא דְּמַחֲשָׁבָה. בְּקַדְמִיתָא אִתְרְשִׁים אִיהוּ לְעֵילָא בְּאַתְוָון דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, אָת רְבִיעָאָה דִילֵיהּ. וּלְבָתַר אַזְעִירַת גַּרְמָהּ לְאִתְקְרֵי בִּשְׁמָא דְּאֱלהִים.

(ט) וְעִם כָּל דָּא סַלְקָא לְכָל סִטְרִין לְעֵיל בְּאָת ה' בְּחִבּוּרָא דְּאַתְוָון דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא.

(6) "And Elohim made the two great luminaries" (Gen. 1:16). "And...made", וַיַּעַשׂ, meaning everything as it should be, in size and correctness. The phrase: "The two great luminaries" indicates that the two were united at first [ i.e. equal, and therefore they did not need each other]. This is the secret of the two names of God (Y-H-V-H - Elohim) taken as one, which although not openly revealed can be surmised. ...

(7) The moon was not at ease with the sun because she felt embarrassed before it. The moon said to the sun: "Tell me, you whom I love so well, where do you feed your flock?" (Shir Hashirim 1:7). The sun said, "Why do you make your flock to rest at noon?" (Shir Hashirim 1:7). This is as if to say: How can a tiny candle shine in the middle of the day? (The moon said,) "Why should I be like one who cloaks themselves?" (Ibid.) That is: how can I remain in shame? Then she lowered herself to be head of the lower beings, as it is written: "If you do not know, O fairest of women, go follow the tracks of the flock and graze your kids by the tents of the shepherds" (Ibid. 8). Thus, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to her, 'Go and diminish yourself.'

(8) From then on, she had no light of her own. She had only the light she received from the sun. At first, they were united as one on the same level, but she later lowered herself from all of its grades. This means that it lost all her grades. Although she is the head of the lower worlds, she is nevertheless considered to have lost all her grades, as in principle a woman has no significance unless she is together with her husband. "The greater luminary" (Gen. 1:16) is called by the name Yud Hei Vav Hei. "The lesser luminary" (Ibid.) is called by the name Elohim. At first, she was inscribed above in the fourth letter of the Holy Name Yud Hei Vav Hei, because the female is the lower Hei. But afterward, she lowered herself to be called by the name Elohim.

(9) In spite of all this, she ascended on all sides and shone in all directions from above.
