(6) the land of Egypt is before you; in the best of the land make your father and your brothers dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell. And if you know any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.’

(3) And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.

(3) ויבכו אתו מצרים שבעים יום AND THE EGYPTIANS WEPT FOR HIM THREESCORE AND TEN DAYS — viz., forty days during the period of embalming and thirty more days for mourning. They wept for him during so long a period because a blessing had come to them on his arrival in Egypt for the famine then ceased and the waters of the Nile again increased (Tosafot Sotah 10).

(10) And when Pharaoh closed in, the children of Israel looked and saw the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were very afraid; and the children of Israel cried out unto Hashem. (11) They said to Moses: ‘Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you done this? Is this why we were brought out of Egypt?

(22) And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. (23) When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah, for it was bitter. Therefore it was called Marah. (24) The people murmured against Moses, saying: ‘What will we drink?’ (25) He cried to Hashem; and Hashem showed him a tree, and he cast it into the water, and the water was made sweet. There He made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He proved them; (26) He said: ‘If you diligently listen to the voice of the Hashem your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and listen to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will give you none of the diseases which I gave the Egyptians; for I am Hashem that heals you.’

(27) And they came to Elim, where were twelve springs of water, and seventy palm-trees; and they camped there by the waters.

(1) And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their stages according to the commandment of Hashem, and camped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. (2) The people fought with Moses, and said: ‘Give us water to drink.’ And Moses said to them: ‘Why are you fighting with me? Why do you test Hashem?’ (3) The people were thirsty there for water; the people murmured against Moses, and said: ‘Why have you brought us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?’ (4) And Moses cried to Hashem, saying: ‘What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.’ (5) Hashem said to Moses: ‘Pass before the people, and take with you of the elders of Israel; and take your rod, which you used to hit the river, and go. (6) Behold, I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb; and you will hit smite the rock, and water will come our of it, so the people may drink.’ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
