אֲמַר לֵיהּ: עַמָּא פְּזִיזָא, דְּקַדְּמִיתוּ פּוּמַּיְיכוּ לְאוּדְנַיְיכוּ, אַכַּתִּי בְּפַחְזוּתַיְיכוּ קָיְימִיתוּ. בְּרֵישָׁא אִיבַּעְיָא לְכוּ לְמִשְׁמַע, אִי מָצִיתוּ — קַבְּלִיתוּ, וְאִי לָא — לָא קַבְּלִיתוּ.
דקדמיתו פומייכו לאודנייכו - קודם ששמעתם אותה היאך היא קשה ואם תוכלו לעמוד בה קבלתם עליכם לקיימה:
The heretic said to Rava: You impulsive nation, who accorded precedence to your mouths over your ears. You still bear your impulsiveness, as you act without thinking. You should listen first. Then, if you are capable of fulfilling the commands, accept them. And if not, do not accept them.
(Rashi 'who accorded precedence to your mouths over your ears': Before having heard the difficulty (of the Torah) and whether you would be able to withstand it, you accepted to fulfil it.)
אֲמַר לֵיהּ: אֲנַן דְּסָגֵינַן בִּשְׁלִימוּתָא כְּתִיב בַּן: ״תֻּמַּת יְשָׁרִים תַּנְחֵם״
דסגינן בשלימותא - התהלכנו עמו בתום לב כדרך העושים מאהבה וסמכנו עליו שאל יטעננו בדבר שאל נוכל לעמוד:
He said to him: We, who proceed wholeheartedly and with integrity, it is written: “The integrity of the upright will guide them” (Proverbs 11:3)
(Rashi 'Who proceed wholeheartedly': We walked with H with a complete heart like those who do things out of love, and we trusted that we wouldn't be required to do things we could not withstand.)
