Our Rabbis taught: "Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it." (Ex. 20:7)-Remember it over wine.

(1) It is biblically mandated positive commandment to sanctify the Sabbath with speech, as it is written (Exodus 20, 7): "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." i.e. Remember through remberance of praise and through Kiddush. And it must be remembered when it begins and when it ends. When it begins - with Kiddush, and when it ends - with Havdala.

How is this done? You take a cup that can hold a revi'it (4.5-8 oz.) or more, that is clean inside and outside, and fill it up with wine and hold it in your right hand, and raise it up at least a tefach (~ 4 in.) or more. Bless over the fruit of the vine and then over the sanctity of the day. And it is a widespread custom among Jews to say the paragraph beginning Vayechulu (Gen. 2:1) and then bless the wine and then the day. And then drink a full cheek's worth, and then pour for everyone at the table and then wash hands and bless the bread and eat.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments, and hoped for us, and with love and intent invested us with His sacred Sabbath, as a memorial to the deed of Creation. It is the first among the holy festivals, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. For You chose us, and sanctified us, out of all nations, and with love and intent You invested us with Your Holy Sabbath.

Blessed are You, Adonai, Sanctifier of the Sabbath.

(2) Women are obligated in Kiddush, even though it is a positive commandment dependent on time, because "Remember" (positive commandments for Shabbat) is connected to "Guard" (negative commandments for Shabbat). And these women, since they are included in "Guard", they are also included in "Remember". And they can discharge men (from their obligation) since they are obligated Biblically like them.

...And he says Vayechulu while standing, and then "creator of the fruit of the vine" and then kiddush. Gloss: One can stand for kiddush, but it is preferable to sit (Kol Bo). Our custom is to sit while saying Vayechulu, but when we begin we stand a little to honor God's name, because when you begin, Vayechulu Hashamayim God's name is hinted at in an acrostic.
