דָּ"אַ כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּטֹּל יַעֲקֹב אֶת הַבְּרָכוֹת:
(...Another explanation is: They became dim just in order that Jacob might receive the blessings (Genesis Rabbah 65:8).
Story of the first born
1) There is so much deception around getting Yitzchak to give Yaakov the blessing. If the bracha was due to Yaakov, why did they simply not just tell Yitzchak that Esav sold the bracha to Yaakov.
Meanwhile, he had to become blind, Yaakov had to put on special clothing and pretend to be Esav...
2) Why did H' make it that Esav was born first if the blessing was meant for Yaakov
3) Yitzchak asks for the food that he loves. Is that the concern of a Tsaddik - to eat a nice steak dinner? Yitzchak wants to hurry and bless his son because he was worried that he might pass away. Why does he need him to make a whole meal? and if he was hungry, why couldn't he just have a snack? Why does she tell her son to get her 2 goats? How much can one person eat already?
The princess and the peasant
- She's unhappy
- Gets her a new dress, new jewelry, new house
Nimshal
- Princess is the soul and the peasant is the body.
- We sometimes have impulses and think it is from the body
- We eat, watch a movie, move to a new city, get a new car... but it never works
- The impulse is coming from the soul and we are trying to respond with bodily need
Lesson
- The purpose is not that the body completely give into the body. There is purpose in the body itself
- The body is also spiritual essentially and innately desires that the light of the soul be revealed within the body in order to reveal the essential G-dliness of the body. The body itself is holy and in truth it is holier than the soul!
- We spoke many times that we are not down hear to get tested to earn heaven.
- The truth is that Heaven serves earth. Soul comes here to reveal G-d here.
- In heaven G-d is revealed, there is no choice... Angels and souls cannot adequately crown H'. They are simply overwhelmed with H's greatness and have no choice in the matter. But down here we can choose.
- Everything we do for H' in this world, we are fulfilling the purpose of creation. Only the body can do this.
Yaakov and Esav
- Yaakov and Esav reflect this reality. They battled from within their mother's body
- The body is like Esav and is self serving. Yaakov just wants to serve H'
- They don't initially get along. The soul cannot just tell the body that it is created to listen to H.
- Yaakov bribes Esav and deceives to get the blessing. The soul starts by tricking the body.
- Initially the body will follow the soul for other reasons but eventually the body will be convinced as-well
- Initially the body and soul are two entities that are at odds but eventually they merge into one strong desire
- At the end of the parasha, Esav wants to kill Yaakov - the body turns on the soul and the soul needs to run. but in 2 weeks we read vayishlach and when they meet again, they make up, and Esav wants to travel with Yaakov but Yaakov tells him the children are to weak and slow. THey meet in the era of Moshiach.
Rivka makes it happen
- This all happens with Rivka. Rivka, she nurishes humanity. the mother is the ultimate in being able to be spiritual and physical at the same time.
Why the lavish meals
- Yitzchak desires to bless Esav because he knows that the ultimate is that the body is the purpose of it all. The purpose is that Esav be refined and have its holiness revealed.
- Rivka sees that the time is not ripe for that to take place
- That is why he needs to eat prior to blessing. he needs to connect to the purpose of creation, to this world towards which his blessing is directed.
- He doesn't love the food, he loves that it is the focal point of the purpose of creation.
- The purpose is Esav, Yaakov brings it about and the woman makes it happen.
