Jethro is able to advise Moses, because, as an outsider, he could see what Moses, as someone operating from within a set structure, could not. Jethro’s advice also constitutes two parts: how to focus on what’s your unique contribution, and how to embrace a broader understanding of Torah and mitzvot. How often do we make a point to seek out the advice and discernment of an outsider? And how much do we, in our own lives, follow Jethro’s advice? Rabbi Dov Linzer explains.
