Were We All at Sinai? A Feminist Look at Revelation

(3) and Moses went up to God. Adonai called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel: (4) ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me. (5) Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine, (6) but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
(Exodus 19:3) "And Moses went up to G d": This was on the second day. "and the L rd called to him": We are hereby apprised that the calling preceded the speaking. "Thus shall you say": "thus" — in the holy tongue. "Thus" — in this order. "Thus" — on this matter. "Thus" — that you do not detract and that you not add. "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob" — the women, "and speak to the children of Israel" — the men. "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob" — "gently"; "say" — Give the women the basic ideas. "and speak to the children of Israel": "speak" in detail to the men.

(10) and Adonai said to Moses, “Go to the people and warn them to stay pure today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothes. (11) Let them be ready for the third day; for on the third day Adonai will come down, in the sight of all the people, on Mount Sinai. (12) You shall set bounds for the people round about, saying, ‘Beware of going up the mountain or touching the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death: (13) no hand shall touch him, but he shall be either stoned or shot; beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up on the mountain.” (14) Moses came down from the mountain to the people and warned the people to stay pure, and they washed their clothes. (15) And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day: [the men among] you should not go near a woman.”
DO NOT GO NEAR A WOMAN during the whole of these three days, this was in order that the women may immerse themselves on the third day and be pure to receive the Torah. If they have relations within the three days, the woman could [involuntarily] expel semen after her immersion and become unclean again. After three days have elapsed, however, the semen has already become putrid and is no longer capable of fertilization, so it is pure from contaminating the woman who expels it. (cf. Shabbat 86a)
Etz Hayim Commentary
15. Do not go near a woman According to God's instructions, all the people, women as well as men, were to be present for the revelation at Sinai. Moses confuses that invitation by adding this prohibition; here, as in the incident of striking the rock at Meribah (Num. 20), he takes liberties in transmitting God's word. We might learn from this verse that, despite Judaism's emphasis on family and congregation as settings for fashioning holiness, sometimes we need distance from others, even from those with whom we are most intimate, to find God.

(9) You stand this day, all of you, before Adonai your God—your tribal heads, your elders and your officials, all the men of Israel, (10) your children, your wives, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to water drawer— (11) to enter into the covenant of Adonai your God, which Adonai your God is concluding with you this day, with its sanctions; (12) to the end that God may establish you this day as God's people and be your God, as God promised you and as God swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (13) I make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone, (14) but both with those who are standing here with us this day before Adonai our God and with those who are not with us here this day.
We All Stood Together - Merle Feld
My brother and I were at Sinai He kept a journal of what he saw of what he heard of what it all meant to him
I wish I had such a record of what happened to me there
It seems like every time I want to write I can’t I’m always holding a baby one of my own or one for a friend always holding a baby so my hands are never free to write things down
And then As time passes The particulars The hard data The who what when where why Slip away from me And all I’m left with is The feeling
But feelings are just sounds The vowel barking of a mute
My brother is so sure of what he heard After all he’s got a record of it Consonant after consonant after consonant
If we remembered it together We could recreate holy time Sparks flying
