Lesson #1: Teaching Torah Refines the Individual
(5) Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the wealth that they had amassed, and the persons that they had acquired in Haran; and they set out for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in the land of Canaan,
Reish Lakish said: Anyone who teaches the son of his colleague Torah - it is as if he has made him, as the verse states: "And the souls which he made"... (Sanhedrin 99:2)
Lesson #2: Prayer Before You Need Something
R' Elazar said: Always a person should preempt his prayer to the suffering, for if not for Abraham's prayer preempting the suffering between Bet-El and Ai, there would have been no one left from the "enemies of the Israelites"... (Sanhedrin 44b)
Lesson #3: Blessing from one's Wife
(16) And because of her, it went well with Abram; he acquired sheep, oxen, asses, male and female slaves, she-asses, and camels.
(ב"מ נ"ט א')
R' Halabo said: Always a person should be careful to honor his wife, for blessing is not found in the home of a person but because of his wife, as the verse states, "And because of her, it went well with Abram..." (Baba Mesiah 59a)
(19) Thus the Sages commanded: A man should honor his wife more than himself and love her as himself. If his money abounds, according to what he can afford. He should not inspire excess fear in her, and he should speak gently with her, and be neither depressed nor hot-tempered.
A disciple of the wise adjusts his affairs judiciously: he eats, drinks and supports his family within his capital and material success; but he should not overburden himself more than necessary. The wise men command a worldly custom that a man should not eat meat save when craving it, even as it is said: "Because thy soul desireth to eat flesh" (Deut. 12.20). It is enough for a healthy person to eat meat from Friday night to Friday night. If, however, he is rich enough to eat meat daily he may eat. The wise men commanded and said: "Ever let a man eat less than what his financial means allow, dress within his means, but honor his wife and children with more than his means allow".
