Havdalah Ithaca

אָמְרִי לֵיהּ מָר יָנוֹקָא וּמָר קַשִּׁישָׁא בְּרֵיהּ דְּרַב חִסְדָּא לְרַב אָשֵׁי: זִימְנָא חֲדָא אִיקְּלַע אַמֵּימָר לְאַתְרִין, וְלָא הֲוָה לַן חַמְרָא. אַיְיתִינָא לֵיהּ שִׁיכְרָא, וְלָא אַבְדֵּיל וּבָת טְווֹת. לִמְחַר, טְרַחְנָא וְאַיְיתִינָא לֵיהּ חַמְרָא, וְאַבְדֵּיל וּטְעֵים מִידֵּי. לְשָׁנָה תּוּ אִיקְּלַע לְאַתְרִין, לָא הֲוָה לַן חַמְרָא, אַיְיתִינָא שִׁיכְרָא, אָמַר: אִי הָכִי, חֲמַר מְדִינָה הוּא, אַבְדֵּיל וּטְעֵים מִידֵּי.

Pesachim 107a:3

Mar Yanuka and Mar Kashisha, sons of Rav Ḥisda, said to Rav Ashi: Once Ameimar happened to come to our place and we did not have wine for havdala. We brought him beer and he did not recite havdala, and he passed the night fasting, as it is prohibited to eat before havdala. The next day we exerted ourselves and brought him wine, and he recited havdala and tasted some food. The next year he again happened to come to our place. Once again we did not have wine and we brought him beer. He said: If it is so difficult to obtain wine in your place, beer is the wine of the province. He recited havdala over the beer and tasted some food.

פסחים ק״ז א:ה׳

בְּעָא מִינֵּיהּ רַב הוּנָא מֵרַב חִסְדָּא: מַהוּ לְקַדּוֹשֵׁי אַשִּׁיכְרָא? אָמַר: הַשְׁתָּא וּמָה פִּירְזוּמָא וּתְאֵינֵי וְאַסְנֵי דִּבְעַאי מִינֵּיהּ מֵרַב, וְרַב מֵרַבִּי חִיָּיא, וְרַבִּי חִיָּיא מֵרַבִּי, וְלָא פְּשַׁט לֵיהּ — שִׁיכְרָא מִיבַּעְיָא?!

Pesachim 107a:5

In the above story, Ameimar refused to recite havdala over beer. The Gemara addresses this issue at greater length. Rav Huna raised a dilemma before Rav Ḥisda: What is the halakha with regard to whether it is permitted to recite kiddush over date beer? He said: Now, if with regard to barley beer, fig beer, and beer produced from berries, I raised a dilemma before Rav as to whether or not they may be used for kiddush, and Rav had previously raised this dilemma before Rabbi Ḥiyya, and Rabbi Ḥiyya had inquired of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, and he did not resolve it for him, as he could not find a source that clearly permits it, is it necessary to say that date beer, which is inferior to those other types of beer, may not be used for kiddush?

אין מבדילין על הפת אבל על השכר מבדילין אם הוא חמר מדינה וה"ה לשאר משקין חוץ מן המים: הגה וטוב יותר להבדיל על כוס פגום של יין מעל שכר (אבודרהם) ונהגו להבדיל במוצאי פסח על שכר ולא על יין משום דחביב עליו :

2. Havdalah may not be recited over bread. However, he may recite Havdalah over any beverage that is the “wine of the region,”with the exception of water. RAMA: It is better to say Havdalah over a blemished cup of wine rather than liquor (Avudraham). We have a custom to say Havdalah on Motzei Pesach over liquor and not over wine because it is precious to us.

בדבר המשקאות של מיני סאדע /סודה/ אם יש להם דין חמר מדינה לקדש בשחר ולהבדיל עליהן, הנכון לע"ד דהן כמים בעלמא דאף ששותין אותם גם בסעודות החשובות ומכבדין בהם אבל הוא רק כשתיית מים לצמאון ולהתקרר בימים החמים ובשעה החם להם, והכבוד בהם הוא ג"כ רק כשצריכין לזה וגם במים צוננין מכבדין כשצריכין להם. וחשיבות משקה הוא שאין השתיה מחמת שצריכים להם לצמאם אלא שותים אותם אף בלא צורך לגופם אלא בשביל כבוד הסעודה וכבוד האורחים, דאין שום אדם שותה יין וה'"ש ושכר לצמאו דע"ז שותין מים שיותר עדיפי אלא רק לכבוד בעלמא שותין אותן ואלו המינים נקראים בשם משקה וחמר מדינה.

Concerning drinks like soda, do they have the status of "wine of the region" in order that one could recite kiddush over them in the morning and havdalah over them.

The correct practice in my mind is that they are like water, for even though they drink them in important meals and they treat them with respect, drinking them is just like drinking water to quench one's thirst or to cool off on hot days. Their importance is only when one needs to cool off, and cold water is also important when needed.

The importance of a drink is expressed when it is drunk not because one needs its for thirst but rather when one drinks it even when one does not need it, but rather for the importance of the meal or the visitors.

For no one drinks wine or alcohol or beer to quench his thirst, for water is better for this. Rather people drink these beverages because they are enjoyable, and these are the types of beverages that are called "wine of the region."
