Text in Context Lesson - Sh'mot
Text study on Sh'mot for staff of Camp Sababa, an alternative religious school day camp program for Temple Judea in Tarzana, California.
The Blessing for Studying Torah:

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu laasok b’divrei Torah.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to engage with words of Torah.

(10) And Moses said to God, “Please, Adonai, I am not a man of words. Neither yesterday nor the day before - nor since you spoke to your servant! Because I am heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue."

(11) And God said to him, “Who gives humans a mouth? Who makes them mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, Adonai?

(12) And now go, and I will be with your mouth and I will teach you what you shall speak.”

(13) But he said, “Please, God, send someone else."

Ibn Ezra on Exodus 4:13:3
What happened was that Moses first replied, I am not a man of words (v. 10), and it is difficult for one who is slow of speech to speak before the king. Moses thought that God would miraculously remove his slowness of speech. However, when God answered him,[and said] and (I) will teach you what you shall speak (v. 12), Moses knew that his slowness of speech would not be removed. Moses thus wondered why God did not send Aaron to Pharaoh. It is for this reason that he said, please, God, send someone else.

וְאֶת־הַמַּטֶּ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה תִּקַּ֣ח בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶׂה־בּ֖וֹ אֶת־הָאֹתֹֽת׃ {פ}

(14)And Adonai’s anger flared at Moses, and God said, “Is there not Aaron the Levite, your brother? I know that he can speak, and he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, his heart will be happy.

(15) And you shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I, I shall be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I will tell both of you what you should do.

(16) And he will speak for you to the people. And so he, he will be like a mouth for you, and you will be for him like a god.

(17) And you shall take this staff in your hand, with which you’ll do the signs.”

Abraham Joshua Heschel, I Asked for Wonder: A Spiritual Anthology

Everything depends on the person who stands in front of the classroom. The teacher is not an automatic fountain from which intellectual beverages may be obtained. The teacher is either a witness or a stranger. To guide a pupil into the promised land, the teacher must have been there themselves. When asking themselves: Do I stand for what I teach? Do I believe what I say? The teacher must be able to answer in the affirmative. What we need more than anything else is not textbooks, but text-people. It is the personality of the teacher which is the text that the pupils read: the text that they will never forget. [Edited for gender neutrality]

Reflection Questions:

  • How do you think this is connected to the sacred work we do as teachers?
  • How can we create a community in which our learners feel set up for success?
  • How can you use this idea in what you bring to our Sababa staff team.
