Prayer for the State of Israel (5783) תפילה לשלום המדינת ישראל

The official prayer for Israel ordained by chief rabbis in 1948, with added prayer for sanctification of the name and for Torah witness to the nations.

תפילה לשלום הארץ ישראל (5784)

אבינו שבשמים, צור ישראל וגואלו, ברך את מדינת ישראל, סימן צמיחת גאולתינו. יתקדש שמך בקרבה, הגן עליה באברת חסדך ופרש עליה סכת שלוםך ושלח אורך ואמתךראשיה, שריה, יועציה ושופטיה. תקנם בעצה טובה מלפניך, ולומדם לשפוט את העם משפט צדק. חזק את ידי מגני ארץ קדשנו והנחלם אלהינו ישועה, ועטרת נצחון תעטרם, נתתה משפת צדק ושלום שלום בארץ, וחכמת לב ליושביה להאיר לגוים, ושמחה לכל העולות ברגל לבקש פניך שם. יהי מדינת ישראל צמיחת גאולת עלם ככתוב בנבאיך:

(ב) וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית הַיָּמִ֗ים נָכ֨וֹן יִֽהְיֶ֜ה הַ֤ר בֵּית־יהוה בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הֶהָרִ֔ים וְנִשָּׂ֖א מִגְּבָע֑וֹת וְנָהֲר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃(ג) וְֽהָלְכ֞וּ עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֗ים וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ לְכ֣וּ ׀ וְנַעֲלֶ֣ה אֶל־הַר־יהוה אֶל־בֵּית֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יַעֲקֹ֔ב וְיֹרֵ֙נוּ֙ מִדְּרָכָ֔יו וְנֵלְכָ֖ה בְּאֹרְחֹתָ֑יו כִּ֤י מִצִּיּוֹן֙ תֵּצֵ֣א תוֹרָ֔ה וּדְבַר־יהוה מִירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃(ד) וְשָׁפַט֙ בֵּ֣ין הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וְהוֹכִ֖יחַ לְעַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וְכִתְּת֨וּ חַרְבוֹתָ֜ם לְאִתִּ֗ים וַחֲנִיתֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ לְמַזְמֵר֔וֹת לֹא־יִשָּׂ֨א ג֤וֹי אֶל־גּוֹי֙ חֶ֔רֶב וְלֹֽא־יִלְמְד֥וּ ע֖וֹד מִלְחָמָֽה׃ {פ}

Isaiah 2:2-4

(2) In the days to come, The Mount of GOD’s House Shall stand firm above the mountains And tower above the hills; And all the nations Shall gaze on it with joy.

(3) And the many peoples shall go and say: “Come, Let us go up to the Mount of GOD, To the House of the God of Jacob; That we may be instructed in God’s ways, And that we may walk in God’s paths.” For Holy law will come from Zion, The word of GOD from Jerusalem.

(4) Thus [God] will judge among the nations, And arbitrate for the many peoples, And they shall beat their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks: Nation shall not take up Sword against nation; They shall never again teach and learn warfare.

ואֶת אַחֵינוּ כָּל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל,
פְּקׇד נָא בְּכָל אַרְצוֹת פְּזוּרֵיהֶם,
וְתוֹלִיכֵם מְהֵרָה קוֹמְמִיּוּת לְצִיּוֹן עִירֶךָ
וְלִירוּשָׁלַיִם מִשְׁכַּן שְׁמֶךָ,
כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ (דברים ל,ד-ו):
"אִם יִהְיֶה נִדַּחֲךָ בִּקְצֵה הַשָּׁמָיִם,
מִשָּׁם יְקַבֶּצְךָ יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וּמִשָּׁם יִקָּחֶךָ.
וֶהֱבִיאֲךָ יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יָרְשׁוּ אֲבֹתֶיךָ וִירִשְׁתָּהּ,
וְהֵיטִבְךָ וְהִרְבְּךָ מֵאֲבֹתֶיךָ.
וּמָל יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶת לְבָבְךָ וְאֶת לְבַב זַרְעֶךָ,
לְאַהֲבָה אֶת יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכׇל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכׇל נַפְשְׁךָ,
לְמַעַן חַיֶּיךָ."

Remember our brethren, the whole house of Israel, in all the lands of their dispersion,

Lead them, swiftly and upright, to Your city Zion and to Jerusalem, the abode of Your Name, as is written in the Torah of Your servant Moses: “Even if your outcasts are at the ends of the world, from there the Lord your God will gather you, from there He will fetch you. And the Lord your God will bring you to the land that your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will make you more prosperous and more numerous than your fathers. Then HaShem your G-d will open your and your children's hearts,
to love HaShem your G-d with all your heart and soul, so that you may live."

יַחֵד לְבָבֵנוּ לְאַהֲבָה וּלְיִרְאָה אֶת שְׁמֶךָ,
וְלִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל דִּבְרֵי תּוֹרָתֶךָ,
וּשְׁלַח לָנוּ מְהֵרָה בֶּן דָּוִד מְשִׁיחַ צִדְקֶךָ,
לִפְדּוֹת מְחַכֵּי קֵץ יְשׁוּעָתֶךָ.
הוֹפַע בַּהֲדַר גְּאוֹן עֻזֶּךָ
עַל כׇּל יוֹשְׁבֵי תֵּבֵל אַרְצֶךָ,
וְיֹאמַר כֹּל אֲשֶׁר נְשָׁמָה בְּאַפּוֹ:
"יהוה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֶלֶךְ,
וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה!"
אָמֵן סֶלָה.

Draw our hearts together to revere and venerate Your name and to observe all the precepts of Your Torah, and send us quickly the Messiah son of David, agent of Your vindication, to redeem those who await Your deliverance.

Manifest yourself in the splendor of Your boldness before the eyes of all inhabitants of Your world, and may everyone endowed with a soul affirm that the Lord, God of Israel, is king and his dominion is absolute. Amen forevermore.

[Added here is prayer for sanctification, for justice, and for Torah witness to the nations, which the 1948 assume is postponed until after the messiah. We include Isaiah 2:4 here, after removing it from the American Prayers for the secular Government, for the State of Israel, for Redemption, and for Diaspora Jewry, and pray for prophetic fulfillment of 2:2-3 there, which is the logical order and appropriate role. This allows us to remove the hints of false secular messianism, replacement theology and supercesssionism, from the prayers for the US and other National governments found in orthodox and conservative siddurs. Although religious Zionism leaves much to be desired, America is not the light of the world or the prophetic fulfillment at the end of history, as some of American prayer siddurs seem to think. Jerusalem is the light of the world, not Washington D.C., and "a city on a hill cannot be hidden". and prayers should reflect sound theology and prophetic hermeneutics rather than the wishful thinking of christian dominionist and progressive liberals who want to believe that America is the promised land.

אָבִינוּ שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם,
צוּר יִשְׂרָאֵל וְגוֹאֲלוֹ,
בָּרֵךְ אֶת מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל,
הָגֵן עָלֶיהָ בְּאֶבְרַת חַסְדֶּךָ,
וּפְרֹשׂ עָלֶיהָ סֻכַּת שְׁלוֹמֶךָ,
וּשְׁלַח אוֹרְךָ וַאֲמִתְּךָ לְרָאשֶׁיהָ, שָׂרֶיהָ וְיוֹעֲצֶיהָ,
וְתַקְּנֵם בְּעֵצָה טוֹבָה מִלְּפָנֶיךָ, ויתקדש שמך בקרביה.
חַזֵּק אֶת יְדֵי מְגִנֵּי אֶרֶץ קׇדְשֵׁנוּ,
וְהַנְחִילֵם אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְשׁוּעָה
וַעֲטֶרֶת נִצָּחוֹן תְּעַטְּרֵם,
וְנָתַתָּ משפט צדק ושָׁלוֹם בָּאָרֶץ,
וְשִׂמְחַת לב ליושביה לְכל העלות ברגל לבקש אתך שם.

מציון תצא תורה, ודבר יהוה מירושלים.

יהי ישראל אור לגוים, צמיחת גאלתני וגאולת עלם.

DRAFT VERSION

Our Father in Heaven, Rock and Redeemer of Israel, bless the State of Israel, Shield it with Your lovingkindness, envelop it in Your peace, and bestow Your light and truth upon its leaders, ministers, and advisors, and grace them with Your good counsel, and May your name be sanctified in its midst. Strengthen the hands of those who defend our holy land, grant them deliverance, and adorn them in a mantle of victory. Ordain justice and peace in the land, and grant joy of heart to its inhabitants and to all who arise on pilgrimage to seek you there.

May the law go forth from Zion and the word of God from Jerusalem. May Israel become a light unto the nations, the sprouting of our redemption and the redemption of all.
