(1) These are the names of the sons of Yisrael who came to Egypt with Yaakov, each coming with his household: (2) Reuven, Shimon, Levi, and Yehudah; (3) Yissachar, Zevulun, and Benyamin; (4) Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. (5) So all the persons, those issuing from Yaakov's loins, were seventy persons, Yoseph being already in Egypt. (6) Yoseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. (7) Yet the Children of Israel bore fruit, they swarmed, they became many, they grew mighty (in number) - exceedingly, yes, exceedingly; the land filled up with them.

(8) Now a new king arose over Egypt who had not known Yoseph. (9) He said to his people, “Here, (this) people, the Children of Israel, is many More and mightier (in number) than we! (10) Come now, let us use our wits against it, lest it become many more, and then, if war should occur, it too be added to our enemies and make war upon us or go up away from the land! (11) So they set gang captains over it, to afflict it with their burdens. It but storage cities for Pharaoh - Pitom and Ra'amses. (12) But as they afflicted it, so did it become many, so did it burst forth. And they felt dread before the Children of Israel

(15) Now the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, (16) he said, “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, see the supporting stones: if he be a son, put him to death; but if she be a daughter, she may live.” (17) But the midwives held God in awe, and they did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, they let the (male) children live. (18) The king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, you have let the children live?” (19) The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Indeed, not like the Egyptian (women) are the Hebrew (women), indeed, they are lively: before the midwife comes to them, they have given birth.” (20) And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people became many and grew exceedingly might (in number). (21) It was, since the midwives held God in awe, that God made them households. (22) Now Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son that is born, you shall throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”

(1) A certain man of the house of Levi went and married/took (to wife) a Levite woman. (2) The woman conceived and bore a son; When she saw him - that he was goodly (ki tov), she hid him, for three months. (3) When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a little ark of papyrus, she loaned it with loam and with pitch, placed the child in it, and placed it in the reeds by the shore of the Nile. (4) Now his sister stationed herself far off, to know what would be done to him.

(5) Now the daughter of Pharaoh went down to bathe at the Nile, and her maidens were walking along the Nile. She saw the little ark among the reeds and sent her maid, and she fetched it. (6) She opened (it), and saw him, the child - here, a boy weeping! She pitied him, and she said, "One of the Hebrews' children is this!" (7) Now his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a Hebrew nurse to suckle the child for you?” (8) And Pharaoh’s daughter answered, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. (9) And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Have this child go with you and nurse him for me, and I myself will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and she nursed it. (10) The child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She called his name Moshe/He-Who-Pulls-Out, explaining, “For out of the water meshitihu/I pulled him”

(11) Now it was some years later, when Moshe had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, one of his brothers. (12) He turned this way and that and, seeing no one about, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. (13) When he went out the next day, he found two Hebrew men scuffling; so he said to the offender, “Why do you strike your fellow?” (14) He retorted, “Who made you prince and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Moshe became afraid, and said: Surely the matter is known! (15) When Pharaoh learned of the matter, he sought to kill Moses; but Moses fled from Pharaoh's face. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down beside a well.

(16) Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came, they drew (water) and they filled the troughs, to give drink to their father's sheep; (17) Shepherds came and drove them away. Moshe rose up, he delivered them and gave drink to their sheep. (18) When they returned to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come back so soon today?” (19) They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the hand of the shepherds; he even drew water for us and watered the flock.” (20) He said to his daughters, “Where is he then? For what reason then have you left the man behind? Call him, that he may break bread (with us).” (21) Moshe agreed to settle down with the man, and he gave Moshe his daughter Tzipporah as wife. (22) She bore a son whom he named Gershom/Sojourner There, for he said, “A stranger/sojourner have I become in a foreign land.”

(23) A long time after that, the king of Egypt died. The Children of Israel were groaning under the bondage and they cried out; and their plea for help went up to God, from the servitude.

(24) God hearkened to their moaning,

God called to mind his covenant with Avraham, with Yitzhak, and with Yaakov,

(25) God saw the Children of Israel, and God knew.
