Meat as a Concession
The permission to eat meat ... isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Beginning Bookend
(2) The fear and the dread of you shall be upon all the beasts of the earth and upon all the birds of the sky—everything with which the earth is astir—and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand.
The Permission
(3) Every creature that lives shall be yours to eat; as with the green grasses, I give you all these.
Ending Bookend
(4) You must not, however, eat flesh with its life-blood in it.
Meat Is Murder
(5) But for your own life-blood I will require a reckoning: I will require it of every beast; of humankind, too, will I require a reckoning for human life, of everyone for each other!
(6) Whoever sheds human blood,
By human [hands] shall that one’s blood be shed;
For in the image of God
Was humankind made.
The Covenant ... repeated 5 times
(9) “I now establish My covenant with you and your offspring to come, (10) and with every living thing that is with you—birds, cattle, and every wild beast as well—all that have come out of the ark, every living thing on earth. (11) I will maintain My covenant with you: never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
When the Israelites Asked for Meat
(4) The riffraff in their midst felt a gluttonous craving; and then the Israelites wept and said, “If only we had meat to eat!
Moses' Response
(13) Where am I to get meat to give to all this people, when they whine before me and say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’
So G-d says ...
(18) And say to the people: Purify yourselves for tomorrow and you shall eat meat, for you have kept whining before יהוה and saying, ‘If only we had meat to eat! Indeed, we were better off in Egypt!’ יהוה will give you meat and you shall eat. (19) You shall eat not one day, not two, not even five days or ten or twenty, (20) but a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you. For you have rejected יהוה who is among you, by whining before [God] and saying, ‘Oh, why did we ever leave Egypt!’”
The Quail
(31) A wind from יהוה started up, swept quail from the sea and strewed them over the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and about a day’s journey on that side, all around the camp, and some two cubits deep on the ground. (32) The people set to gathering quail all that day and night and all the next day—even the one who gathered least had ten ḥomers—and they spread them out all around the camp.
The Plague
(33) The meat was still between their teeth, not yet chewed, when the anger of יהוה blazed forth against the people and יהוה struck the people with a very severe plague.
Meat as Gluttony

(34) That place was named Kibroth-hattaavah, because the people who had the craving were buried there.

הַֽתַּאֲוָ֑ה = the gluttony

(20) When יהוה enlarges your territory, as promised, and you say, “I shall eat some meat,” for you have the urge to eat meat, you may eat meat whenever you wish.

תְאַוֶּ֥ה = gluttony

Rav Joseph Soloveitchik

“Of course flesh-eating is legalized, approved. Yet it is classified as ta’avah, lust, repulsive and brutish."

“There is no justifiable reason why one life should fall prey to another. Why should a cunning intelligence that granted man dominion over his fellow animals also give him license to kill?”

----

Rav Yosef Albo

"Killing animals involves cruelty and anger and rage. Eating meat makes the soul thick, murky and occluded."
