(6) Adonai passed before him and proclaimed: “Adonai, Adonai, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and truth,

(7) preserving kindness to the thousandth generation, lifting iniquity, sin and transgression, and acquitting—yet not forgoing all punishment, but visiting the iniquity of parents upon children and children’s children, upon the third and fourth generations.”

(2) He prayed to God, saying, “Adonai! Isn’t this just what I said when I was still in my own country? That is why I fled beforehand to Tarshish. For I know that You are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in kindness, compassionate toward the wicked.

Adonai, Adonai, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and truth, preserving kindness to the thousandth generation, lifting iniquity, sin, and transgression, and acquitting.

In Your Image
Shulamis Yelin
In your image,
in your image, God,
You made me in your image,
and I reach upward, seeking—
to be like You, God.
Just? Like You I'm vengeful,
Merciful? Like You I seek an understanding heart.
Jealous? Yes I'm jealous
and iniquitous
and long suffering—
and like You
I dream to make a world,
(in miniature, God),
to do my bidding.
And loving I can be, yes, loving,
to a penitent punished child.
Yet clearly, God, most clearly,
do I see in me your oneness,
your all-oneness,
your aloneness—
in my heart.
