Parshah Rabbit Hole - Vayigash: Pepper, Spring Break and Carpentry

He [Yaakov] sent Yehudah ahead of him to Yoseif, so that he might direct him to Goshen. They then came to the land of Goshen.

BEFORE HIM — means before he should arrive there. A Midrashic comment is: להורת לפניו (in the sense of, “that there might be teaching before him”) — to establish for him a House of Study from which Teaching (הוראה or תורה) might go forth (Genesis Rabbah 95:3).

The concept of "Chilukim" should be completely obliterated, if only it never would have existed in the world. And even if they say that what they are stating is close to the actual meaning and that they speak of many true ideas, nevertheless, if there is even one untrue thing mixed into it, it makes the whole thing prohibited. It is impossible to even imagine how extraordinarily wrong it is to take the words of G-d, Toras Emes, and turn it upside-down.

And the main thing, which includes everything, the phrase "bein hazmanim" should be completely uprooted from the world. Rather, all times are equally good and should be used uniformly for Torah, as it is written "you shall meditate on them day and night..."(Joshua 1:8)

..

The Torah has also been compared to salt, the Mishnah to pepper, and the Shas to spices. The world cannot exist without salt, without pepper and without spices; but the rich man enjoys all three. So, too, it is impossible for the world to exist without Scripture, without Mishnah and without the Shas.

In Tractate Sofrim, Chapter 15, Halachah 9 it says "The Torah is compared to salt, the Mishnah to pepper, and the Talmud to spices..." This shows that pepper is not included in the category of spices... Therefore, it would seem that one cannot make the blessing "borei minei besamim" on pepper.

§ The Sages taught in a baraita: There are different types of Torah scholars. There is a scholar who is wealthy in figurative property and wealthy in public renown; this is the master of homiletics. There is a scholar who is wealthy in coins and wealthy in houses; this is the master of dialectics. There is one who is wealthy in oil and wealthy in hidden stores; this is the master of halakhic traditions. Everyone is dependent on the owner of wheat; this is the master of Talmud, who understands the reasons behind the rulings and traditions.
It was taught in a baraita: There was a distinguished disciple at Yavne who could with his incisive intellect purify the creeping animal, explicitly deemed ritually impure by the Torah, adducing one hundred and fifty reasons in support of his argument.

"...Who knew how to purify the creeping animal...." - This is confusing: What cleverness is there in purifying the creeping animal which Torah explicitly states is impure. Rabbeinu Tam says...

Yam Shel Shlomo on Bava Kama, Introduction

The scholars of France, the Tosafists, who made [the Talmud] like a unified globe, about whom it is said "the words of the wise are like spurs"(Koheles 12:11), they flipped it and rolled it from one place to another, until it appeared to us as unified whole...

There is a group of crazy people that say that Chiluk sharpens [the mind]. One who says this deserves to be rebuked...

...How did the R"I and Rabbeinu Tam and all the Tosafists become sharpened? Only by studying Toras Emes and mastering tractates and constantly reviewing, both during the school year and during break. Only this is a mitzvah and and should be adhered to, and it will also sharpen the mind such that one will be able to answer through genuine analysis every Oisbrenger, Nuremberger and Regensburger...

But perhaps one would say, “At the end of the day, it is [still] sharpening] - even if it is not similar to true analysis.” If so, it would be better to study the craft of carpentry or other crafts, or the well known game [of chess], through which one can sharpen the skills of wisdom and cunning; so he could also sharpen himself with that. And that would be more appropriate than revealing interpretations of the Torah that are not like the law...

And if you say that the sharpening that comes from learning a craft is not similar or connected to Torah, the sharpening that they involve themselves with is even further from Torah! Because the cleverness of a craft is in the same category as the cleverness of Torah - both of them seek to use cleverness to reach the truth. But their cleverness, the main intent is falsehood, and truth and falsehood are opposites.

Toras Shmuel 5632 vol. 1, p. 25

The whole concept of pilpul is [engaging with] the elusiveness of ideas which are beyond one's comprehension, and which will continue to remain hidden, but if it does remain hidden, one's original [superficial] comprehension of the idea will be lost. Therefore it is referred to as darkness and an obstacle to comprehension, like one who walks in actual, physical darkness. But once the truth of the concept is brought to light, since this was something that was previously shrouded in darkness, this light comes from a high place.
