On its face, frog plague sounds potentially adorable. What made it so bad?

(כו) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (כז) וְאִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י נֹגֵ֛ף אֶת־כׇּל־גְּבוּלְךָ֖ בַּֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃ (כח) וְשָׁרַ֣ץ הַיְאֹר֮ צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ וְעָלוּ֙ וּבָ֣אוּ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבַחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ וְעַל־מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ וּבְבֵ֤ית עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (כט) וּבְכָ֥ה וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ וּבְכׇל־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יַעֲל֖וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃ (א) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֒ אֱמֹ֣ר אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן נְטֵ֤ה אֶת־יָדְךָ֙ בְּמַטֶּ֔ךָ עַ֨ל־הַנְּהָרֹ֔ת עַל־הַיְאֹרִ֖ים וְעַל־הָאֲגַמִּ֑ים וְהַ֥עַל אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ב) וַיֵּ֤ט אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶת־יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל מֵימֵ֣י מִצְרָ֑יִם וַתַּ֙עַל֙ הַצְּפַרְדֵּ֔עַ וַתְּכַ֖ס אֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ג) וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֥ן הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֖ים בְּלָטֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעֲל֥וּ אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ד) וַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֜ה לְמֹשֶׁ֣ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַעְתִּ֣ירוּ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְיָסֵר֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִמֶּ֖נִּי וּמֵֽעַמִּ֑י וַאֲשַׁלְּחָה֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְיִזְבְּח֖וּ לַיהֹוָֽה׃
(25) When seven days had passed after יהוה struck the Nile, (26) *This verse constitutes 8.1 in some editions. יהוה said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says יהוה: Let My people go that they may worship Me. (27) If you refuse to let them go, then I will plague your whole country with frogs. (28) The Nile shall swarm with frogs, and they shall come up and enter your palace, your bedchamber and your bed, the houses of your courtiers and your people, and your ovens and your kneading bowls. (29) The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your courtiers.’” (1) And יהוה said to Moses, “Say to Aaron: Hold out your arm with the rod over the rivers, the canals, and the ponds, and bring up the frogs on the land of Egypt.” (2) Aaron held out his arm over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. (3) But the magician-priests did the same with their spells, and brought frogs upon the land of Egypt. (4) Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Plead with יהוה to remove the frogs from me and my people, and I will let the people go to sacrifice to יהוה.”
כתנאי רבי עקיבא אומר צפרדע אחת היתה ומלאה כל ארץ מצרים אמר לו רבי אלעזר בן עזריה עקיבא מה לך אצל הגדה כלה מדברותיך ולך אצל נגעים ואהלות צפרדע אחת היתה שרקה להם והם באו:
The Gemara comments: This matter is subject to a dispute between tanna’im: Rabbi Akiva says: It was one frog, and it spawned and filled the entire land of Egypt with frogs. Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya said to him: Akiva, what are you doing occupying yourself with the study of aggada? This is not your field of expertise. Take your statements to the tractates of Nega’im and Oholot. In other words, it is preferable that you teach the halakhot of the impurity of leprosy and the impurity imparted in a tent, which are among the most difficult areas of halakha and are within your field of expertise. Rather, the verse is to be understood as follows: It was one frog; it whistled to the other frogs, and they all came after it.

(ג) וּבְכָה וּבְעַמְּךָ, פַּרְעֹה הִתְחִיל בַּעֲבֵרָה תְּחִלָּה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמות א, ט י): וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל עַמּוֹ, וּבוֹ הִתְחִילָה הַמַּכָּה תְּחִלָּה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וּבְכָה, וְאַחַר כָךְ וּבְעַמְּךָ, וְאַחַר כָּךְ וּבְכָל עֲבָדֶיךָ. אָמַר רַבִּי אַחָא וּבְכָה רְאָיָה שֶׁהָיָה שׁוֹתֶה מַיִם וְטִפָּה אַחַת יוֹרֶדֶת עַל לִבּוֹ וְנַעֲשָׂה צְפַרְדֵּעַ וְנִבְקַעַת שָׁם. רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן אָמַר כָּל מָקוֹם שֶׁהָיָה שָׁם עָפָר וְהָיָה טִפָּה שֶׁל מַיִם בּוֹ הָיָה נַעֲשָׂה צְפַרְדֵּעַ. חִזְקִיָּה בְּרַבִּי אָמַר אִם כַּשִּׁיטָה הַזּוֹ לֹא לָקוּ בָּתֵּיהֶם שֶׁל גְּדוֹלִים שֶׁהָיוּ עֲשׂוּיִין בְּשַׁיִשׁ וּבִפְסִיפַס, אֶלָּא מְלַמֵּד שֶׁהָיָה הַצְּפַרְדֵּעַ עוֹלָה מִן הַתְּהוֹם וְאוֹמֶרֶת לַשַּׁיִשׁ עֲשֵׂה לִי מָקוֹם שֶׁאֶעֱלֶה וְאֶעֱשֶׂה רְצוֹן בּוֹרְאִי, וְהָיָה נִבְקַע הַשַּׁיִשׁ וְעוֹלָה וְנוֹטֶלֶת בֵּית הַסְּתָרִים שֶׁלָּהֶם וּמְסָרְסָן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהלים עח, מה): וּצְפַרְדֵּעַ וַתַּשְׁחִיתֵם, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמַר (ויקרא כב, כה): כִּי מָשְׁחָתָם בָּהֶם.

(3) “Upon you, upon your people, and upon all your servants, the frogs will ascend” (Exodus 7:29).
“Upon you, upon your people” – Pharaoh began with the transgression first, as it is stated: “He said to His people…” (Exodus 1:9), and the plague began with him first, as it is stated: “Upon you,” then “upon your people,” and then “and upon all your servants.” Rabbi Aḥa said: “Upon you” – this is an indication that he would drink water and one drop would descend onto his heart and would become a frog, and it would split there.9It would split there into many frogs. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: Every place where there was soil and a drop of water, a frog would be created there.
Ḥizkiya son of Rabbi said: If it were in accordance with this opinion, the houses of the prominent people, which were made of marble and tiles, would not have been afflicted. Rather, it teaches that a frog would ascend from the depths and say to the marble: ‘Make room for me so I can ascend and perform the will of my Creator.’ The marble would split, and [the frog] would [then] ascend and remove their genitals and neuter them, as it is stated: “And frogs that destroyed them [vatashḥitem]” (Psalms 78:45), as it is stated: “Because their corruption [moshḥatam] is in them” (Leviticus 22:25).10This verse is written in the context of the prohibition to bring a castrated animal as an offering.

(ו) וַיֵּצֵא משֶׁה וַיִּצְעַק אֶל ה' עַל דְּבַר הַצְפַרְדְּעִים, רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה אָמְרוּ, לֹא דַי לָהֶם לַמִּצְרִיִּים הַשְׁחָתַת הַצְפַרְדְּעִים, אֶלָא שֶׁהָיָה קוֹלָן שֶׁל צְפַרְדְּעִים קָשֶׁה לָהֶם מִמַּכָּתָן, שֶׁהָיוּ נִכְנָסוֹת בְּגוּפָן וְצוֹעֲקִין בְּתוֹכָן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: עַל דְּבַר הַצְפַרְדְּעִים אֲשֶׁר שָׂם לְפַרְעֹה, עַל דִּבּוּר הַצְּפַרְדְּעִים. וַיַּעַשׂ ה' כִּדְבַר משֶׁה וַיָּמֻתוּ הַצְפַרְדְּעִים, לְפִי שֶׁלֹא הָיָה לָהֶם שׁוּם הֲנָאָה בְּנִבְלָתָם וּבְעוֹרָן, לְכָךְ מֵתוּ. וַיִּצְבְּרוּ אֹתָם חֳמָרִם חֳמָרִם, מְלַמֵּד שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד מֵהֶן הָיָה עוֹשֶׂה אַרְבַּע אַשְׁפּוֹת, וְהָיְתָה הָאָרֶץ מַבְאֶשֶׁת, לְפִי שֶׁהָיוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל נִבְאָשִׁין מִמַּכּוֹת הַמִּצְרִיִּים, מִדָּה כְּנֶגֶד מִדָּה. וַיַּרְא פַּרְעֹה כִּי הָיְתָה הָרְוָחָה, כָּךְ דֶּרֶךְ הָרְשָׁעִים כְּשֶׁהֵן בְּצָרָה הֵם צוֹעֲקִים וּבְעֵת הָרְוָחָה חוֹזְרִין לְקִלְקוּלָן. כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר ה', וְהֵיכָן דִּבֵּר (שמות ג, יט): וַאֲנִי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי לֹא יִתֵּן אֶתְכֶם מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם לַהֲלֹךְ.

(6) “Moses and Aaron emerged from Pharaoh; and Moses cried to the Lord regarding the frogs that He had brought upon Pharaoh” (Exodus 8:8).
“Moses…emerged…and…cried to the Lord regarding the frogs” – our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said: It was not just the destruction that the frogs caused the Egyptians, but the sound of the frogs was harsher for them than the physical damage, as they would enter their bodies and scream inside them, as it is stated: “Regarding [al devar] the frogs that He had brought upon Pharaoh” – regarding the speech [al dibur] of the frogs.

(א) מן הבתים מן החצרת אבל לא מן התנורים ומן המשארות, לפי שמסרו נפשם למות על מצות הקב״‎ה כמו שאמרו רבותינו, חזרו למקום תולדתם חיים.

(1) מן הבתים מן החצרות, “from the houses and subsequently from the courtyards,” but not the frogs that had ventured into the ovens and kneading bowls. Seeing that these frogs had risked their lives by performing such a dangerous mission on behalf of G-d, they were allowed to remain alive.
