Teach-In - Inauguration Day

A new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.

2 Malachim 23:1-3
Then the king directed that all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem should be gathered to him.
The king went up to the house of the Lord, and with him went all the people of Judah, all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord.
The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord, keeping his commandments, his decrees, and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. All the people joined in the covenant. (Josiah's Reformation)

Rabbi Chanina says: Pray for the welfare of the government, for were it not for the fear of it, man would swallow his fellow alive.

Ben Zoma says:

Who is wise?

One who learns from all people...

Who is mighty?

One who conquers their impulses, as it says, "slowness to anger is better than a mighty person and the ruler of his spirit than the conqueror of a city." (Mishlei 16:32).

Who is rich?

One who is happy with their lot, as it says, "When you eat [from] the work of your hands, you will be happy, and it will be well with you" (Tehilim 128:2).

Who is honored?

One who honors others.

You may indeed set over you a (leader)... Even so, he must not acquire many horses for himself,
And he must not acquire many wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away;
also silver and gold he must not acquire in great quantity for himself.
When he has taken (power) he shall have a copy of this law
It shall remain with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear Adonai his God, diligently observing all the words of this law and these statutes,
neither exalting himself above other members of the community nor turning aside from the commandment, either to the right or to the left, so that he and his descendants may reign long over his kingdom in Israel.
Devarim 17:15-20

You graciously endow mortals with intelligence, teaching us wisdom. Grant us knowledge, wisdom, and discernment. Praised are You Adonai, who graciously grants us intelligence.

Amidah

May You quickly uproot and crush the arrogant; may you subdue and humble them in our time. Praised are You, Adonai, who humbles the arrogant.

Amidah

You shall appoint magistrates and officials for your tribes, in all the settlements that Adonai your God is giving you, and they shall govern the people with due justice. You shall not judge unfairly: you shall show no partiality; you shall not take bribes, for bribes blind the eyes of the discerning and upset the plea of the just.
Justice, justice shall you pursue, that you may thrive and occupy the land that Adonai your God is giving you.
Devarim 16:18-20

He [Rabbi Hillel] used to say:

If I am not for me, who will be for me? And when I am for myself alone, what am I?

And if not now, then when?

In ethics, the other’s right to exist has primacy over my own, a primacy epitomized in the ethical edict: you shall not kill, you shall not jeopardize the life of the other. (Emmanuel Levinas, 1906-1995)

Shimon the Righteous was from the remnants of the Great Assembly. He would say, "On three things the world stands: on the Torah, on the service and on acts of lovingkindness."

Adonai sent (the prophet) Nathan to (King) David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.
The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb.
Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him.”
Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, "As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die. He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”
Nathan said to David, “You are the man!"
2 Samuel 12

He would say: Beloved is man, since he is created in the image [of God]... as it says (Bereshit 9:6): "for in God's image was man made."
