(יג) הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ הַנָּבִ֑יא לָב֗וֹא נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל לְהַכּ֖וֹת אֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (יד) הַגִּ֤ידוּ בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְהַשְׁמִ֣יעֽוּ בְמִגְדּ֔וֹל וְהַשְׁמִ֥יעוּ בְנֹ֖ף וּבְתַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס אִמְר֗וּ הִתְיַצֵּב֙ וְהָכֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי־אָכְלָ֥ה חֶ֖רֶב סְבִיבֶֽיךָ׃ (טו) מַדּ֖וּעַ נִסְחַ֣ף אַבִּירֶ֑יךָ לֹ֣א עָמַ֔ד כִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה הֲדָפֽוֹ׃ (טז) הִרְבָּ֖ה כּוֹשֵׁ֑ל גַּם־נָפַ֞ל אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֗הוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ ק֣וּמָה ׀ וְנָשֻׁ֣בָה אֶל־עַמֵּ֗נוּ וְאֶל־אֶ֙רֶץ֙ מוֹלַדְתֵּ֔נוּ מִפְּנֵ֖י חֶ֥רֶב הַיּוֹנָֽה׃ (יז) קָרְא֖וּ שָׁ֑ם פַּרְעֹ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ שָׁא֔וֹן הֶעֱבִ֖יר הַמּוֹעֵֽד׃

(13) The word that GOD spoke to the prophet Jeremiah about the coming of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon to attack the land of Egypt: (14) Declare in Egypt, proclaim in Migdol,
Proclaim in Noph and Tahpanhes!
Say: Take your posts and stand ready,
For the sword has devoured all around you!
(15) Why are your stalwarts swept away?
They did not stand firm,
For GOD thrust them down;
(16) Many were made to stumble,
They fell over one another.
They said:
“Up! let us return to our people,
To the land of our birth,
Because of the deadly sword.”
(17) There they cried out "Pharaoh king of Egypt is nothing but noise: he set a time to go out to battle, but he let the time for battle pass because he was afraid."

וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּ֥ם מִשָּׁ֛ם אֶת־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ וּמָצָ֑אתָ כִּ֣י תִדְרְשֶׁ֔נּוּ בְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָ֖ וּבְכׇל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃
But if you search there, you will find your God יהוה, if only you seek with all your heart and soul—
הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, יָפָה שָׁעָה אַחַת בִּתְשׁוּבָה וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, מִכָּל חַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. וְיָפָה שָׁעָה אַחַת שֶׁל קוֹרַת רוּחַ בָּעוֹלָם הַבָּא, מִכָּל חַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה:
He used to say: more precious is one hour in repentance and good deeds in this world, than all the life of the world to come; And more precious is one hour of the tranquility of the world to come, than all the life of this world.
וְהָיָ֕ה כִּֽי־יֹאמְר֥וּ אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם בְּנֵיכֶ֑ם מָ֛ה הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָכֶֽם׃

And when your children ask you, ‘What do you mean by this rite?’

וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לְבִנְךָ֔ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לֵאמֹ֑ר בַּעֲב֣וּר זֶ֗ה עָשָׂ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ לִ֔י בְּצֵאתִ֖י מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃
And you shall explain to your child on that day, ‘It is because of what יהוה did for me when I went free from Egypt.’
עׇזִּ֤י וְזִמְרָת֙ יָ֔הּ וַֽיְהִי־לִ֖י לִֽישׁוּעָ֑ה זֶ֤ה אֵלִי֙ וְאַנְוֵ֔הוּ אֱלֹהֵ֥י אָבִ֖י וַאֲרֹמְמֶֽנְהוּ׃
יהוה is my strength and might;
He is become my deliverance.
This is my God and I will enshrine Him;
The God of my father’s [house], and I will exalt Him.

They cried out there: God created our physical world such that material reality feels itself to be real and everything that cannot be sensed physically to be non-real. This state of alienation from Divine consciousness is connoted by the word "there." As opposed to being "here," i.e., in God's presence, we are all somewhere over "there," lost in the fan- tasyland governed by the illusion of self-sufficient existence. Nevertheless, it is specifically in this material world as opposed to even the most sublime spiritual world - that we can bond with God's essence, through fulfilling His commandments. This is the import of the verse "you will seek God from there, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and soul. Similarly, this verse can be interpreted to teach the same lesson: "They [the Jewish peo- ple] cry out from 'there' [i.e., from their material existence

in this physical world, where] Pharaoh king of Egypt [i.e., the dominant culture of materialism] makes a loud noise, [drowning out the voice of Divinity in the racket of mass distraction, on account of which the Jewish people] have exchanged [the joy of] the appointed times [for rejoicing, i.e., the Jewish holidays, for the empty mindlessness of unending diversions]."

We are thus promised that if we remain aware of the spir- itually debilitating context within which we live and actively seek to overcome it - and especially if we work to elevate and refine it - God will allow us to find Him and restore our lost Divine consciousness. The cumulative effect of our repeated efforts toward this end will be the ultimate elevation and refinement of reality in general, which will usher in the final, messianic Redemption."
