Parshah Rabbit Hole: Bo - Dogs, Cats and Bad Jobs

But among all the B’nei Yisrael, a dog will not sharpen its tongue at man or animal. You will then know that Hashem distinguishes between Egypt and Yisrael.

וְאַנְשֵׁי־קֹ֖דֶשׁ תִּהְי֣וּן לִ֑י וּבָשָׂ֨ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה טְרֵפָה֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ לַכֶּ֖לֶב תַּשְׁלִכ֥וּן אֹתֽוֹ׃ {ס}

You shall be men of holiness to Me, and you must not eat flesh that was torn off in the field. Throw it to the dog.

YE SHALL CAST IT TO THE DOGS — You may give it to a heathen as well as to the dog. Or, perhaps this is not so, but כלב is to be taken literally? Scripture, however, states with regard to carrion, (Deuteronomy 14:21) “Thou shalt give it to a stranger or sell it unto an alien”, from which it follows by a conclusion à fortiori that you may derive whatever benefit you like from the Trefa (and so you also may give it to heathen). But if this be so, what is the force of Scripture expressly saying “to the dog”? It is to teach you that the dog is to be given preference in this respect and Scripture tells you at the same time that God does not withhold the reward due to any of His creatures. The dog is entitled to reward because it is stated, (Exodus 11:7) “But against the children of Israel shall not a dog move its tongue”, and this happened. The Holy One, blessed be He, said: Give it the reward it deserves (Mekhilta d'Rabbi Yishmael 32:30:3).

"flesh that was torn off in the field..."

Since the dog gave it's life [to guard sheep from becoming] terefah when the wolf came to attack it, you will not be ungrateful to it, that when you have terefah you throw it to [the dog] as a reward for successfully guarding it until now, and for guarding all the other {sheep]. Because that is the way of the world to set dogs to guard the flock from the wolves:

Why did dogs merit that of their excrement sacred books and tefillin should be made? Because it stated, But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue.

A scraper, i.e., one whose task is to gather the excrement of dogs and the like to use for the processing of hides or for medicinal purposes, one who quarries copper in its mine, and a leatherworker, even though they are loathsome because of their profession, should purify their bodies and their garments and ascend to Jerusalem together with the Jewish people as a whole to appear before God.

[The following rules apply when] a husband suffers blemishes after he marries. Even if his hand or foot is cut off, or he becomes blinded in one eye, and his wife no longer desires to live with him, he is not forced to divorce her and pay [her the money due her by virtue of] her ketubah. Instead, if she desires to remain married, she may. If she does not desire this, she may obtain a divorce without receiving [the money due her by virtue of] her ketubah, as is the law concerning any woman who rebels against her husband.
If, however, he becomes afflicted by [constant] bad breath or a smell from his nose, or becomes a collector of dog feces, a miner of copper, or a tanner, he is forced to divorce his wife and pay [her the money due her by virtue of] her ketubah [if she desires to terminate the marriage]. If she desires, she may remained married to her husband.

If [the yavam] possesses the same difficulty that his brother, [the late husband,] had, she has the right to say: "I was willing to accept this difficulty with regard to your brother. I am not willing to accept it with regard to you." He should perform the rite of chalitzah and pay [her the money due her by virtue of] her ketubah.
"May you see your children [father] children, and may there be peace over Israel."

The third, to confirm our faith in the matters of torah in our hearts through logical proofs and refutation of heretics like the book of Emunot (of Rabbi Saadia), the Sharashei Hadat, the Sefer Mekametz and similar works.

mekametz -- (literally: gatherer) the book is called by this name because its author gathered together all the heretical views found in their nonsense and disgusting words, and then refuted them, demonstrating their foolishness, and exposing their foul stench, until everyone realized they are but wild dogs. And the Sages already said (Ketuvot 77a) "what is a mekametz? [Answer:] One who gathers up dog excrement."

...and even though animals have no reward and punishment, because they act on natural instinct [and do not have free will], G-d said to give it its reward. From this a person can learn a lesson to know the ways of G-d, that how much more so there is a reward and punishment for a person who has free will.

The students of Rabbi Eliezer asked him: For what reason do all predators dominate mice and prey on them? He said to them: Because concerning mice, their inclination [shesuran] is evil. The Gemara asks: What is the indication of this? Rava said: They gnaw even at cloaks, despite the fact that cloaks do not provide nourishment for them.

...do not eat from a place where a rat or a cat has bitten, for that too is harmful to your memory.

The students of Rabbi Elazar asked him: For what reason does a dog recognize its master, while a cat does not recognize its master? Rabbi Elazar said to them: If it is established that with regard to one who eats from that which a mouse eats, eating that item causes him to forget, with regard to the cat, who eats the mouse itself, all the more so does eating it cause it to forget.

"a cat does not recognize its master." This is confusing according to the stories that are told in the book "Natural History" which illustrate how cats have feelings of love and friendship with their owners. And I will tell one story here and from it you will understand...

..According to this story and other stories like it, it is proven that the cat also knows its owner and does not forget them, so how can they say here that the cat does not know its owner? Therefore, it seems that Rabbi Elazar's opinion is true, and the reason for the forgetfulness of the cat that does not know its owner is because it eats mice, and therefore every cat that does not eat mice but eats from its owner's table the meat of animals, fowl, and fish that its owner gives it every day during the meal, and does not eat the mice but hunts them and sends them away, it has no forgetfulness of anything, and the disciples of Rabbi Elazar ben Tzadok were only talking about a cat that eats mouse meat.

Reshimos, no. 39

Cat: Its intellect is deficient. "A cat does not recognize its master" (Horayot 13a). On the other hand, it's emotional qualities are good. "Even if the Torah had not been given, we would have learned modesty from the cat" (Eruvin 100b).

Dog: The opposite. "The dog recognizes its master" (Horayot 13a), a dog is intelligent. But it is "all heart" ("kulo lev"), and it is controlled by its heart. And even its intelligence is used just for eating and drinking. But in its emotional qualities it is impudent (Beitzah 25b), and [dogs] mated on the ark.

Similarly, Rabbi Yoḥanan said: Even if the Torah had not been given, we would nonetheless have learned modesty from the cat, which covers its excrement...

And this is the same as what Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: There are three impudent ones: The Jewish people among the nations; the dog among animals; and the rooster among birds.
