The Beauty of Esther

Today, we're going to talk about how our Jewish tradition sees beauty through Esther. This story gives us a way to think about what beauty means in our מסורה. Is beauty just about how we look, or is it about other things too? Let's learn about Esther and see what lessons we can find about beauty and charm in her story.

What makes a woman amazing? How does she look and behave? One famous way our מסורה talks about this is in the last פרק of משלי. There's a special poem there called "Eshet Chayil," which talks about the perfect woman. Let's look at a part of this poem to see what qualities it values in a woman.

משלי ל״א:ל׳-ל״א

(ל) שֶׁ֣קֶר הַ֭חֵן וְהֶ֣בֶל הַיֹּ֑פִי אִשָּׁ֥ה יִרְאַת־יקוק הִ֣יא תִתְהַלָּֽל׃(לא) תְּנוּ־לָ֭הּ מִפְּרִ֣י יָדֶ֑יהָ וִיהַלְל֖וּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִ֣ים מַֽעֲשֶֽׂיהָ׃

Proverbs 31:30-31

(30) Grace is deceptive,
Beauty is illusory;
It is for her fear of the LORD
That a woman is to be praised.(31) Extol her for the fruit of her hand,
And let her works praise her in the gates.

What traits does this text think are most important for the perfect woman?

Do you think it's describing how things are or how we wish they were?

At the end of the first chapter of the Megillah, Vashti stops being queen. The king decides to find a new queen, and he only cares about finding someone who looks pretty. This is when we meet Esther, who is praised for her beauty.

אסתר ב׳:ז׳

(ז) וַיְהִ֨י אֹמֵ֜ן אֶת־הֲדַסָּ֗ה הִ֤יא אֶסְתֵּר֙ בַּת־דֹּד֔וֹ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין לָ֖הּ אָ֣ב וָאֵ֑ם וְהַנַּעֲרָ֤ה יְפַת־תֹּ֙אַר֙ וְטוֹבַ֣ת מַרְאֶ֔ה וּבְמ֤וֹת אָבִ֙יהָ֙ וְאִמָּ֔הּ לְקָחָ֧הּ מׇרְדֳּכַ֛י ל֖וֹ לְבַֽת׃

Esther 2:7

(7) He was foster father to Hadassah—that is, Esther—his uncle’s daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The maiden was beautiful; and when her father and mother died, Mordecai adopted her as his own daughter.

מגילה י״ג א:י״ב

רַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה אוֹמֵר: הֲדַסָּה שְׁמָהּ, וְלָמָּה נִקְרֵאת אֶסְתֵּר?... בֶּן עַזַּאי אוֹמֵר: אֶסְתֵּר, לֹא אֲרוּכָּה וְלֹא קְצָרָה הָיְתָה, אֶלָּא בֵּינוֹנִית כַּהֲדַסָּה. רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן קׇרְחָה אָמַר: אֶסְתֵּר — יְרַקְרוֹקֶת הָיְתָה, וְחוּט שֶׁל חֶסֶד מָשׁוּךְ עָלֶיהָ.

Megillah 13a:12

Rabbi Neḥemya concurs and says: Hadassah was her real name. Why then was she called Esther? ... Ben Azzai says: Esther was neither tall nor short, but of average size like a myrtle tree, and therefore she was called Hadassah, the Hebrew name resembling that myrtle tree. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korḥa said: Esther was called Hadassah because she was greenish, having a pale complexion like a myrtle, but a belt ofchessed was strung around her, giving her a beautiful look

Esther is said to be very pretty. But there's a debate among חז"ל about whether Esther was naturally beautiful. This might seem surprising because it's assumed she must have been really pretty to catch the king's eye. However, some people believe she wasn't conventionally beautiful. Still, she was chosen along with other beautiful women to go to the palace. This suggests that Esther's beauty might be more than just how she looks on the outside.

Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korha says Esther's kindness is what makes her seem beautiful. Do you think being kind can make someone look prettier?

After arriving at the castle, the young women spent a whole year getting ready to meet the king. For the first six months, they bathed in a special oil called myrrh, which was thought to make their skin soft and remove hair. Then, for the next six months, they used perfumes, oils, and makeup to look as beautiful as possible. When it was time to meet the king, they could bring any extra things they wanted to look their best. Now let's see how Esther prepared for her big moment.

אסתר ב׳:ח׳-ט׳

(ח) וַיְהִ֗י בְּהִשָּׁמַ֤ע דְּבַר־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וְדָת֔וֹ וּֽבְהִקָּבֵ֞ץ נְעָר֥וֹת רַבּ֛וֹת אֶל־שׁוּשַׁ֥ן הַבִּירָ֖ה אֶל־יַ֣ד הֵגָ֑י וַתִּלָּקַ֤ח אֶסְתֵּר֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶל־יַ֥ד הֵגַ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר הַנָּשִֽׁים׃(ט) וַתִּיטַ֨ב הַנַּעֲרָ֣ה בְעֵינָיו֮ וַתִּשָּׂ֣א חֶ֣סֶד לְפָנָיו֒ וַ֠יְבַהֵ֠ל אֶת־תַּמְרוּקֶ֤יהָ וְאֶת־מָנוֹתֶ֙הָ֙ לָתֵ֣ת לָ֔הּ וְאֵת֙ שֶׁ֣בַע הַנְּעָר֔וֹת הָרְאֻי֥וֹת לָֽתֶת־לָ֖הּ מִבֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיְשַׁנֶּ֧הָ וְאֶת־נַעֲרוֹתֶ֛יהָ לְט֖וֹב בֵּ֥ית הַנָּשִֽׁים׃

Esther 2:8-9

(8) When the king’s order and edict was proclaimed, and when many girls were assembled in the fortress Shushan under the supervision of Hegai 3. Esther too was taken into the king’s palace under the supervision of Hegai, guardian of the women.(9) The girl pleased him and won his favor, and he hastened to furnish her with her cosmetics and her rations, as well as with the seven maids who were her due from the king’s palace; and he treated her and her maids with special kindness in the harem.

Esther 2:12-15

(12) When each girl’s turn came to go to King Ahasuerus at the end of the twelve months’ treatment prescribed for women (for that was the period spent on beautifying them: six months with oil of myrrh and six months with perfumes and women’s cosmetics, ...(15) When the turn came for Esther.... to go to the king, she did not ask for anything but what Hegai,... advised. Yet Esther won the admiration of all who saw her.

Why do you think Esther didn't bring extra things to meet the king?
Even though Esther didn't focus on her beauty, people still like her. What do you think makes her charming?

At the most exciting part of the Megillah story, Mordechai tells Esther she has to talk to the king to save their people. Esther is worried because she could get in trouble or even be killed for going to the king without him asking her to. But she decides to do it anyway because it's really important. Just like before, she knows she has to get ready for this important meeting. Let's see how Esther gets ready for this big moment, which is the most important one in her life.

(טו) וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֶסְתֵּ֖ר לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶֽל־מׇרְדֳּכָֽי׃(טז) לֵךְ֩ כְּנ֨וֹס אֶת־כׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִ֜ים הַֽנִּמְצְאִ֣ים בְּשׁוּשָׁ֗ן וְצ֣וּמוּ עָ֠לַ֠י וְאַל־תֹּאכְל֨וּ וְאַל־תִּשְׁתּ֜וּ שְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ לַ֣יְלָה וָי֔וֹם גַּם־אֲנִ֥י וְנַעֲרֹתַ֖י אָצ֣וּם כֵּ֑ן וּבְכֵ֞ן אָב֤וֹא אֶל־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־כַדָּ֔ת וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר אָבַ֖דְתִּי אָבָֽדְתִּי׃

Esther 4:15-16

(15) Then Esther sent back this answer to Mordecai:(16) “Go, assemble all the Jews who live in Shushan, and fast in my behalf; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens will observe the same fast. Then I shall go to the king, though it is contrary to the law; and if I am to perish, I shall perish!”

מגילה י״ג א:י׳

״וַיְהִי אוֹמֵן אֶת הֲדַסָּה״, קָרֵי לַהּ ״הֲדַסָּה״ וְקָרֵי לַהּ ״אֶסְתֵּר״? תַּנְיָא, רַבִּי מֵאִיר אוֹמֵר: אֶסְתֵּר שְׁמָהּ, וְלָמָּה נִקְרָא שְׁמָהּ הֲדַסָּה — עַל שֵׁם הַצַּדִּיקִים שֶׁנִּקְרְאוּ הֲדַסִּים. וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר: ״וְהוּא עוֹמֵד בֵּין הַהֲדַסִּים״.

Megillah 13a:10

The verse states: “And he had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther” (Esther 2:7). She is referred to as “Hadassah” and she is referred to as “Esther.” ... Rabbi Meir says: Esther was her real name. Why then was she called Hadassah? On account of the righteous, who are called myrtles [hadassim], and so it states: “And he stood among the myrtles [hahadassim]” (Zechariah 1:8).

Midrash Panim Acherim, Version B, Paragraph 2

The myrtle has a good smell, just like Esther, who performed good deeds; the myrtle does not dry out either in summer or in winter, just as the righteous dry up neither in this world nor in the World to Come.

Why do you think Esther decided to fast for three days before meeting her husband, who might not care about deep things?
What can we learn about Esther from how she prepared for this meeting?

Esther's story shows that good actions can lead to good outcomes, which is different from what happened with Vashti. Look at the parts of the story where people talk about Esther. Think about how what she does connects to all the praise she gets from others.

(יז) וַיֶּאֱהַ֨ב הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ אֶת־אֶסְתֵּר֙ מִכׇּל־הַנָּשִׁ֔ים וַתִּשָּׂא־חֵ֥ן וָחֶ֛סֶד לְפָנָ֖יו מִכׇּל־הַבְּתוּל֑וֹת וַיָּ֤שֶׂם כֶּֽתֶר־מַלְכוּת֙ בְּרֹאשָׁ֔הּ וַיַּמְלִיכֶ֖הָ תַּ֥חַת וַשְׁתִּֽי׃

Esther 2:17

(17) The king

loved Esther more than all the other women, and she won his grace and favor more than all the girls. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

אסתר רבה ו׳:ט׳

(ט) וּבְהַגִּיעַ תֹּר אֶסְתֵּר וגו' וַתְּהִי אֶסְתֵּר נֹשֵׂאת חֵן בְּעֵינֵי כָּל רֹאֶיהָ (אסתר ב, טו), ...רַבָּנָן אָמְרִין וַתְּהִי אֶסְתֵּר נֹשֵׂאת חֵן בְּעֵינֵי כָּל רֹאֶיהָ, בְּעֵינֵי הָעֶלְיוֹנִים וּבְעֵינֵי הַתַּחְתּוֹנִים, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמַר (משלי ג, ד): וּמְצָא חֵן וְשֵׂכֶל טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי אֱלֹקִים וְאָדָם.

Esther Rabbah 6:9

(9)“With the arrival of the turn of Esther, daughter of Aviḥayil uncle of Mordekhai, who had taken her as his daughter, to go to the king, she did not request anything except that which Hegai, the king's official, guardian of the women, said; and Esther found favor in the eyes of everyone who saw her” (Esther 2:15).
“With the arrival of the turn of Esther…Esther found favor in the eyes of everyone who saw her” ...The Rabbis said: “And Esther found favor in the eyes of everyone who saw her” – in the eyes of the higher beings [angels] and of the lower [humans]; that is what is written: “And you shall find favor and good grace in the eyes of God and man” (Proverbs 3:4).
