Parshah Rabbit Hole - Terumah: The Parallel Universe Parshah

When you lend money to My people, to the poor person who is with [among] you, do not act toward him as a [demanding] creditor. Do not place the burden of interest upon him.

It is taught in a baraita: Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar said: Ezra enacted for the Jewish people that they should read the portion of the curses that are recorded in Leviticus before Shavuot and the portion of the curses that are recorded in Deuteronomy before Rosh HaShana. The Gemara asks: What is the reason for this? Abaye said, and some say that it was Reish Lakish who said: In order that the year may conclude together with its curses, and the new year may begin without the ominous reading of the curses.

[In certain years] There are 29 weeks but only 28 Torah portions [before Pesach]. Therefore, there are places where they split Parshas Mishpatim from "If you lend money..." or Parshas Ki Sisa from "And [Moses] Turned...

Luach Davar B'Ito 5765, vol. 2, p.786

It is said that the reason [for this custom] is that a very long time ago there was a plague, and at that time they instituted the practice of combining the portions of Matos and Masei, as if to say that the beds (מִטּוֹת) of the dead should cease and travel (ויסעו) from us, and the plague stopped.

Asher L'David, 7b

In a particular synagogue in this city, the person in charge of the synagogue is not from this city, but the people who pray there are members of the community of this city, which is Algiers, may G-d protect it, and he forces them to do certain things differently than is our custom. Specifically, in a leap year on which Rosh Hashanah falls on a Thursday, our custom is to divide Parshat Mishpatim. But he will not do so, rather, they read Parshat Mishpatim in its entirety, and the following Shabbat they read Parshat Terumah. And everyone else, in every other synagogue, we read half of Marshat Mishpatim as is our custom, and I told the people praying there that this is prohibited by [the mitzvah of] Lo Titgodedu, and there was a Torah Scholar there who replied to me that this prohibition only applies to Biblical matters, and he did not listen to me:

You are the children of the Lord your God: you shall not gash yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.
Shimon the Righteous was one of the last of the men of the great assembly. He used to say: the world stands upon three things: the Torah, the Temple service, and the practice of acts of piety.
The Sages taught that acts of kindness are superior to charity in three respects: Charity can be performed only with one’s money, while acts of kindness can be performed both with his person and with his money. Charity is given to the poor, while acts of kindness are performed both for the poor and for the rich. Charity is given to the living, while acts of kindness are performed both for the living and for the dead.

Furthermore, it is not specifically lending money which is the law - it is a mitzvah to lend them your tools and other things that belong to you, because it is all part of the attribute of kindness, which HaKadosh Baruch Hu desires, as it is written "For He desires kindness" (Michah 7:18), and within kindness is included anything through which a person can improve the life of another.

...Through this practice we will merit the fulfillment of the verse "there will be no one, destitute among you..." (Devarim 15:4). And it is possible to say that even then [in the time of Moshiach] the concept of Gemilus Chasadim will still exist (not because the wealthy person will need to depend on the kindness of others - because he would be considered "destitute" in that moment - but rather) in order to maintain the "pillar" of Gemilus Chasadim (which is one of the three pillars upon which the world stands).
