Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: Four must offer thanks to God with a thanks-offering and a special blessing. They are: Seafarers, those who walk in the desert, and one who was ill and recovered, and one who was incarcerated in prison and went out. All of these appear in the verses of a psalm (Psalms 107).
...it seems to me that in the cases of the sea and the desert, a person wouldn't feel resentful of it after they arrive in peace, because because they traveled there for their own benefit, for the sake of business. And if they had not traveled there, they would not have gotten what they wanted. But a sick or imprisoned person, even after they saved, they could feel resentful and say "if only I would never have gotten sick, or never have been imprisoned, then I would have no need to say the Gomel blessing." Therefore, they are placed at the end [of the list].
My dear friend,
I have received your letter and your questions about the secrets of Kabbalah. However, I am not qualified to answer questions about these matters, for I am lacking in this wisdom...However, I will say this: I will fill this letter with open rebuke, in order to fulfill the commandment of "you shall certainly rebuke your fellow."(Vayikra 19:17) I hope that my words will be beneficial to you and to others like you. I am not worried about the natural vengefulness of human beings, for I trust in the verse, "Rebuke the wise, and they will love you"(Mishlei 9:8) Therefore, I am confident that my words will be agreeable to all who read them.

A general division between the human and the world. The world [is divided] into the sea and dry land. Dry land [is divided] into inhabited and desert. And in each one there is the possibility of being rescued from danger: A sick person (the person themself), prison (inhabited land), the sea and the desert.

The soul is always alive. "For you have returned my soul to me" (Morning Prayers). But the body and soul need to be connected. This connection is through the blood which is created from eating and drinking. The left ventricle. And through breathing. The right ventricle (Likutei Torah, Shir HaShirim, 31a) . And this is:
Prison, in which everything is whole for the person themselves, and the threat is external.
A Sick Person, the deficiency is in the limbs of the body itself.
Desert, in which one suffers from hunger and thirst, as it is stated in the verse (Tehilim 107:5)... eating and drinking.
or
The Sea, the danger is drowning which takes the place of execution by strangulation. (Ketubot, 30b), lacking the breath of life.
Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who bestows kindness upon the culpable, for having bestowed goodness to me.
The meaning of the blessing:"Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who bestows goodness upon the culpable..." This means that even those who are culpable, meaning that they are Reshaim (evil people), because the translation of Rasha (evil person) is "culpable", nevertheless [G-d] bestows goodness to them, and I, too, am like one of them, because even though I am not fitting for it, only goodness has been bestowed upon me.
