(6) If, along the road, you chance upon a bird’s nest, in any tree or on the ground, with fledglings or eggs and the mother sitting over the fledglings or on the eggs, do not take the mother together with her young.
Don't take the mother WITH her young
(7) Let the mother go, and take only the young, in order that you may fare well and have a long life.
Send away the mother and then take the young-->there is reward for this your life will be lengthened.
You shouldn't take the mom IF SHE IS SITTING UPON THE YOUNG
If the misvah of shiluach hakan, a misvah that is easy to complete, has such a great reward of lengthening your life, so to if we complete a misvah that is more difficult, think about the huge reward that we will receive.
(7) למען ייטב לך והארכת ימים, in the matter of dispatching the mother bird before taking her chicks, we find some display of protective concern by the Torah for the preservation of the species, an effort not to destroy the seed of the birds of the field although they are הפקר, unclaimed property. In the example of the dispatch of the mother bird the Torah appears to teach us that even the display by us of concern for such totally unclaimed eggs or chicks is rewarded by the Creator with the party showing this empathy receiving dividends in this life and the principal (reward) in the world to come.
The siforno is trying to explain to us why we receive such an amazing reward for this misvah. We make such an effort to protect the eggs which are "hefker" (public property). By us showing such concern for these unclaimed eggs Hashem is rewarding us now and in olam haba.
The reward for this misvah is a huge reward... someone who can't have children is rewarded with children when completing this misvah.
Connection to 10 commandments: This commandment and the misvah shiluach hakan both include respecting a parent. When completing the misvah of shiluach hakan we are respecting the mother of a bird, and sending away the mom before taking its young. Therefore we see that they both have the same reward as well, which is a lengthened life.
Connection to Tanach: The reward for respecting your parents is the SAME as doing the misvah of shiluach hakan. Also this is the only misvah where the torah specifies the reward, showing us how important the misvot are
(1) To not take the mother upon the young: That we should not take a bird's nest - the mother and the chicks or the eggs together - but rather that we should send away the mother. And about this is it stated (Deuteronomy 22:6), "do not take the mother upon the young."
Don't take the chicks while the mom is there, the misva is to send her away.
(10) From the laws of the commandment are what they said, may their memory be blessed (Chullin 139b), "'If you chance upon a bird's nest in front of you on the path' - just like the path which is not acquired by you; so too all, etc. From here they said, 'Doves from the coop and doves from the attic that nested in cubicles and in edifices, and geese and chickens that nested in an orchard, [one is] obligated in sending away; but [if] they nested within the house, and also Herodian doves, [one is] exempt from sending away. [...And] Rav Yehuda ... said, '[If] he found a nest in the sea, [he is] obligated in sending away,'" as it is included in the expression, 'on the path,' "as it states (Isaiah 43:16), 'So said the Lord, who makes a path in the sea.'" And (Chullin 12:3) "[If] it was flying - [...if] its wings do not touch the nest, one is exempt from sending. [...If] there were[...] damaged eggs, one is exempt from sending, as it states (Deuteronomy 22:6), '[...] young birds or the eggs' - just as young birds are viable, so too [the] eggs [must be] viable [to fall under the law...] If one sent her away and she returned,[...] - even [several] times - one is obligated [to send her away again], as it states (Deuteronomy 22:7),' You shall surely send.'" And the rest of the details of the commandment are elucidated in the last chapter of Chullin.
Little details about the misvah:
-nested within private property-- don't send
-nest in the sea-- send
-flying and wings don't touch nest-- don't send
-damaged eggs-- don't send
-comes back after sent away already-- send again

-Similar to misvah of not slaughtering mother and child same day, because misvah of mercy.
-Mishnah says anyone who would make a prayer just as you have mercy on the mother bird you should have mercy on us, we tell him to not say such a prayer because:
1) we can't give reasons for the misvot
2)we don't know for sure this is the reason for the misvah, we shouldn't be presumptuous
3)God is more interested in us not the bird, the reason we perform this misvah is to show sensitivity to those in need and to train ourselves to do this with people as well.
-Is this misvah a obligation or just something you need to do if you want to take the birds?
zohar: when we send away a mother bird it is so sad that the angel of birds comes and says this is so sad there is a mother bird who has no where to go and how sad the situation is. Hashem answers the bird by saying, what about the jewish person who sent off the bird, who are in exile, who are away from Israel and the best hamikdash. That is more important! Whenever someone performs the misvah of shiluach hakan, Hashem takes up the cause of the Jewish people. We should want to perform this misvah so this interaction can occur between the angel and Hashem.
Also, although the Jews are merciful we must remember that the Jews must fight for their land and there are times where they will need to have a harder edge and be able to fight the cruel people like amalek, and this misvah can help the jews with that.
