Jewish Sources & Names
(2) God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am Yud Hey Vav Hey.(3) I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as El Shaddai, but I did not make Myself known to them by My name Yud Hey Vav Hey.
The Almighty had made a promise to the Patriarchs. He had promised them the land of Canaan but the time had not been ripe for its fulfillment. This is the meaning of the phrase that God had not yet appeared to them by His name. The attribute of Divine fulfillment implied in this name of God had not yet been realized in history (Nechama Liebowitz, New Studies in Shmot, 135)
The super secret name that God tells Moses in this passage is spelled with four Hebrew letters: Yud. Hey. Vav. Hey. You may know that we never pronounce this name in Jewish tradition. Wherever it appears in the prayerbook or in the Torah, we usually substitute a different word. We say, “Adonai,” but Adonai is not God’s name. Adonai is a Hebrew word that means, roughly, “My Lord.” That is why most Jewish and Christian translations of the Bible into English use the word “Lord” wherever Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey appears, even though that is not what the text says...
So, what do we have? Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey looks like a verb form of the three-letter root Hey-Yud-Hey that is simultaneously in the past, present and future tenses. What is the meaning of the root Hey-Yud-Hey? That’s easy. It’s the verb “to be.” Here’s how it usually looks:
היה means “He was.”
הוה means “He is.”
יהיה means “He will be."
So, what is Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey? It must be something like “The One who was, is and will be.” I think you will agree, that is a pretty cool name for God...

It gets more interesting, too. Some people think that it is possible that the four-letter name of God, Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey, was never meant to be pronounced at all... If that is the case, then God’s four-letter name is not pronounceable at all. It is just a flow of sounds:
EE AH OO AH
It is not really a name. It's not even a word. It is a sound, like the sound that the wind makes, that contains the meaning: “This is the God who cannot be explained or described in words, the God who has existed forever, exists in every moment, and who will exist for all eternity.”

Trans & Gender Affirming Power of Names
"To finally have my name changed to who I have always known myself to be is the most wonderful feeling in the world. I am at a loss for words as to how truly happy I am. To be finally at long last to be recognized by my true name is the most wonderful feeling in the world. For others who like myself know who they are and are still fighting for this recognition, a new name is one of the most important things in their life. Sometimes as important as life its self..." -Bree
"For transgender people, choosing a new name is often a profound act of rebirth. It’s not just about selecting a name that one likes; it’s about asserting one’s identity and autonomy in a world that may not always understand or accept it. This new name serves as a powerful declaration of self, a statement about who you are and how you want the world to perceive you.
The process of choosing a name can feel daunting, laden with emotional and social implications. It’s a decision that often carries the weight of potential acceptance or rejection by family, friends, and society. For many, this name will be the one that accompanies their true self into all future endeavors, and thus, picking the “right” name can seem like an overwhelming task.
In my own journey, the process of selecting a name was a deliberate one that spanned several years. I understood that this name needed to resonate not just with who I am today, but also with who I aspire to be in the future. Each name I considered felt like trying on a new piece of clothing, something that had to fit perfectly in terms of comfort, style, and self-perception. Some names resonated initially but faded in their appeal, while others grew on me over time. It was a process of constant reflection and negotiation with my own sense of identity.
Ultimately, the name I chose was one that not only echoed my gender identity but also carried personal significance, embedding traits and aspirations I hold dear. This name became a symbol of my journey and the person I fought to become, encapsulating both my struggles and victories."
