(8) Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. (9) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, (10) but the seventh day is a sabbath of your God ה׳: you shall not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements. (11) For in six days ה׳ made heaven and earth and sea—and all that is in them—and then rested on the seventh day; therefore ה׳ blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.
(טז) וְשָׁמְר֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת לַעֲשׂ֧וֹת אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֛ת לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם בְּרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃ (יז) בֵּינִ֗י וּבֵין֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל א֥וֹת הִ֖וא לְעֹלָ֑ם כִּי־שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים עָשָׂ֤ה ה׳ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּבַיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י שָׁבַ֖ת וַיִּנָּפַֽשׁ׃ {ס}
(16) The Israelite people shall keep the sabbath, observing the sabbath throughout the ages as a covenant for all time: (17) it shall be a sign for all time between Me and the people of Israel. For in six days ה׳ made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day [God] ceased from work and was refreshed.
אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחַי: כׇּל מִצְוֹת שֶׁנָּתַן לָהֶם הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל — נָתַן לָהֶם בְּפַרְהֶסְיָא, חוּץ מִשַּׁבָּת שֶׁנָּתַן לָהֶם בְּצִנְעָא, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״בֵּינִי וּבֵין בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹת הִיא לְעוֹלָם״.
The Gemara cites a further statement with regard to the gift of Shabbat to the Jewish people. Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai: All the mitzvot that the Holy One, Blessed be He, gave to the Jewish people, He gave to them in public [parhesya] except for Shabbat, which he gave to them in private. As it is stated: “It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever” (Exodus 31:17), meaning that in a sense, it is a secret between God and the Jewish people.
וְאָמַר רֵישׁ לָקִישׁ: נׇכְרִי שֶׁשָּׁבַת חַיָּיב מִיתָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וְיוֹם וָלַיְלָה לֹא יִשְׁבֹּתוּ״. וְאָמַר מָר: אַזְהָרָה שֶׁלָּהֶן זוֹ הִיא מִיתָתָן. אָמַר רָבִינָא: אֲפִילּוּ שֵׁנִי בַּשַּׁבָּת.
And Reish Lakish says: A gentile who observed Shabbat is liable to receive the death penalty, as it is stated: “And day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:23), which literally means: And day and night they shall not rest. This is interpreted homiletically to mean that the descendants of Noah may not take a day of rest. And the Master said (57a) that their prohibition is their death penalty, i.e., the punishment for any prohibition with regard to descendants of Noah is execution. Ravina says: If a descendant of Noah observes a day of rest on any day of the week, even one not set aside for religious worship, e.g., on a Monday, he is liable.

(21)“The Lord said to me: See, I have begun delivering before you Siḥon and his land; begin taking possession of his land” (Deuteronomy 2:31). “The Lord said to me: See, I have begun…” – halakha: If a person of Israel is walking on the road on the day before Shabbat and it begins getting dark, and he has money or something else in his hand, what must he do? So taught the Sages: One for whom it became dark [while he was traveling] on the road gives his purse to a gentile. Why is it permitted for him to give it to a gentile? Rabbi Levi said: When the descendants of Noah were commanded, they were commanded regarding only seven matters, and Shabbat is not one of them. That is why they permitted him to give it to a gentile. Rabbi Yosei bar Ḥanina said: An idolater who observed Shabbat before he accepted circumcision upon himself incurs liability to be put to death. Why? Because they were not commanded [to observe] it. What did you see that led you to say that an idolater who observed Shabbat incurs liability to be put to death? Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba said that Rabbbi Yoḥanan said: The way of the world is that when a king and a noblewoman are sitting and conversing with one another, one who comes and inserts himself between them, does he not incur liability to be put to death? So, the Shabbat is between Israel and the Holy One blessed be He, as it is stated: “Between Me and the children of Israel [it is a sign forever]” (Exodus 31:17). That is why any idolater who comes and inserts himself between them, before he accepted circumcision upon himself, incurs liability to be put to death. The Rabbis say: Moses said before the Holy One blessed be He: ‘Master of the universe, given that idolaters were not commanded regarding Shabbat, if they observe it, will You lift Your countenance to them?’ The Holy One blessed be He said to him: ‘Do you fear this matter, as you live, even were they to fulfill all the mitzvot in the Torah, I will topple them before you.’ From where is this derived? From what we read regarding the matter: “See, I have begun delivering before you.”
(א)ביני ובין בני ישראל אות היא לעולם. במה שאוה״ע רואין שישראל נזהרין בשבת ממלאכה בזה אות היא לכל העולם כי ששת ימים וגו׳ שישכילו דרק משום זה הזהיר הקב״ה לישראל ומזה יגיע כבוד ה׳ לכל הארץ וזהו התכלית מכלל הבריאה ע״כ החמיר הקב״ה בקדושת שבת כ״כ:
"Between me and the children of Israel, it is an eternal sign." Since the nations of the world see Israel observing the Sabbath not to perform work on it, this is a sign for the whole world that in six days [Gd created the heavens and the earth]. That they should know that this was the only reason that Gd warned Israel [not to work on the Sabbath] and from this the glory of Gd will reach the whole world. And this is the goal of all creation, and this is why Gd was so strict about the sanctity of Shabbat. (Joshua Kulp translation)

סִימָן: חֲמִשָּׁה אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים, אֵלּוּ הֵן: אֵשׁ, דְּבַשׁ, וְשַׁבָּת, וְשֵׁינָה, וַחֲלוֹם. אֵשׁ — אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים לְגֵיהִנָּם. דְּבַשׁ — אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים לַמָּן. שַׁבָּת — אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. שֵׁינָה — אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים לַמִּיתָה. חֲלוֹם — אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים לַנְּבוּאָה.
The Sages taught: The Gemara says: There are five matters in our world which are one-sixtieth of their most extreme manifestations. They are: Fire, honey, Shabbat, sleep, and a dream. The Gemara elaborates: Our fire is one-sixtieth of the fire of Gehenna; honey is one-sixtieth of manna; Shabbat is one-sixtieth of the World-to-Come; sleep is one-sixtieth of death; and a dream is one-sixtieth of prophecy.

'To set apart one day a week for freedom, a day on which we would not use the instruments which have been so easily turned into weapons of destruction, a day for being with ourselves, a day of detachment from the vulgar, of independence of external obligations, a day on which we stop worshiping the idols of technical civilization, a day on which we use no money, a day of armistice in the economic struggle with our fellow men and the forces of nature-- is there any institution that holds out a greater hope for man's progress than the Sabbath?

(22) On the sixth day they gathered double the amount of food, two omers for each; and when all the chieftains of the community came and told Moses, (23) he said to them, “This is what ה׳ meant: Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy sabbath of ה׳. Bake what you would bake and boil what you would boil; and all that is left put aside to be kept until morning.” (24) So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered; and it did not turn foul, and there were no maggots in it. (25) Then Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath of ה׳; you will not find it today on the plain. (26) Six days you shall gather it; on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.” (27) Yet some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found nothing. (28) And ה׳ said to Moses, “How long will you all refuse to obey My commandments and My teachings? (29) Mark that it is ה׳ who, having given you the sabbath, therefore gives you two days’ food on the sixth day. Let everyone remain in place: let no one leave the vicinity on the seventh day.”
