Psalm 119: Cultivating Orientation in Times of Uncertainty
Jewish Meditation and study of the Psalms
Psalms 119 is the longest Psalm in this Long Acrostic - an alphabetical acrostic in which each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet begins eight lines of poetry. The result is the longest power in the Hebrew bible! 176 verses. The Psalm depicts the edifying truth of unflagging loyalty to God's word, intended to be inculcated in those who recited the text, inscribed their memory. - Robert Alter's commentary on Psalm 119:1
In times of uncertainty, we can rely on or inner compass and our values as a steadying force
Core idea: When life feels unstable, clarity does not come from control but from alignment, returning to guiding principles that help us walk forward with integrity.

(א) אַשְׁרֵ֥י תְמִֽימֵי־דָ֑רֶךְ הַ֝הֹלְכִ֗ים בְּתוֹרַ֥ת יהוה׃ (ב) אַ֭שְׁרֵי נֹצְרֵ֥י עֵדֹתָ֗יו בְּכׇל־לֵ֥ב יִדְרְשֽׁוּהוּ׃ (ג) אַ֭ף לֹא־פָעֲל֣וּ עַוְלָ֑ה בִּדְרָכָ֥יו הָלָֽכוּ׃ (ד) אַ֭תָּה צִוִּ֥יתָה פִקֻּדֶ֗יךָ לִשְׁמֹ֥ר מְאֹֽד׃ (ה) אַ֭חֲלַי יִכֹּ֥נוּ דְרָכָ֗י לִשְׁמֹ֥ר חֻקֶּֽיךָ׃ (ו) אָ֥ז לֹא־אֵב֑וֹשׁ בְּ֝הַבִּיטִ֗י אֶל־כׇּל־מִצְוֺתֶֽיךָ׃ (ז) א֭וֹדְךָ בְּיֹ֣שֶׁר לֵבָ֑ב בְּ֝לׇמְדִ֗י מִשְׁפְּטֵ֥י צִדְקֶֽךָ׃ (ח) אֶת־חֻקֶּ֥יךָ אֶשְׁמֹ֑ר אַֽל־תַּעַזְבֵ֥נִי עַד־מְאֹֽד׃ {פ}

(1)א Happy are those whose way is blameless, who follow GOD’s teaching.(2)Happy are those who observe God’s decrees, who turn to the divine wholeheartedly. These verses highlight that we are not asked to see the future. We are invited to notice the next faithful step. Our values act as light - not answers, but orientation.
Guided Universal Meditation
(Grounding)Take a moment to settle your body. Notice your breath as it is—no need to change it. Feel your feet grounded where you are.
Illumination(Psalm 119:105) “A lamp to my feet, a light to my path.”
Notice that a lamp does not flood the horizon. It reveals just enough to take the next step. Bring to mind a place in your life where clarity feels limited. Instead of seeking the whole answer, ask gently:
"What is the next right step I can see?"
Alignment (Psalm 119:133)“Guide my steps… let nothing destructive rule over me.”
Notice where you may feel pulled off course—by fear, by urgency, by noise. Imagine returning to a guiding value—truth, compassion, integrity, courage. Let it steady you.
Renewal (Psalm 119:28 / 25)“My soul is weary… strengthen me.”
If there is tiredness or heaviness within you, acknowledge it without judgment. Imagine drawing strength not from effort, but from reconnecting to what restores you—words, wisdom, community, meaning.
Closing Kavannah:
As you prepare to return, hold this thought:
I do not need to see the whole path. I can walk forward, guided by what gives life.
When you are ready, open your eyes.
