Vayikra 5786 Shabbat Afternoon Teaching

דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אָדָ֗ם כִּֽי־יַקְרִ֥יב מִכֶּ֛ם קׇרְבָּ֖ן לַֽיהוה מִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה מִן־הַבָּקָר֙ וּמִן־הַצֹּ֔אן תַּקְרִ֖יבוּ אֶת־קׇרְבַּנְכֶֽם׃

Speak to the Israelite people, and say to them:
When any of you presents an offering of cattle to GOD: You shall choose your offering from the herd or from the flock.

וְנֶ֗פֶשׁ כִּֽי־תַקְרִ֞יב קׇרְבַּ֤ן מִנְחָה֙ לַֽיהוה סֹ֖לֶת יִהְיֶ֣ה קׇרְבָּנ֑וֹ וְיָצַ֤ק עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ שֶׁ֔מֶן וְנָתַ֥ן עָלֶ֖יהָ לְבֹנָֽה׃

When a person presents an offering of grain to GOD: The offering shall be of choice flour; [the offerer] shall pour oil upon it, lay frankincense on it,

ונפש כי תקריב. לֹא נֶאֱמַר נֶפֶשׁ בְּכָל קָרְבְּנוֹת נְדָבָה אֶלָּא בַּמִּנְחָה, מִי דַּרְכּוֹ לְהִתְנַדֵּב מִנְחָה? עָנִי. אָמַר הַקָּבָּ"ה, מַעֲלֶה אֲנִי עָלָיו כְּאִלּוּ הִקְרִיב נַפְשׁוֹ (מנחות ק"ד):

ונפש כי תקריב AND WHEN A PERSON (or “A SOUL”) WILL OFFER — Nowhere is the word נפש employed in connection with free-will offerings except in connection with the meal-offering. For who is it that usually brings a meal-offering? The poor man! The Holy One, blessed be He, says, as it were, I will regard it for him as though he brought his very soul (נפש) as an offering (Menachot 104b).

מנחה לשון דורון.

מנחה, another word for “gift.”

אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן טוֹב הַמַּלְבִּין שִׁינַּיִם לַחֲבֵירוֹ יוֹתֵר מִמַּשְׁקֵהוּ חָלָב, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר "וּלְבֶן שִׁנַּיִם מֵחָלָב" (בראשית מט:יב) - אַל תִּקְרֵי לְבֶן שִׁינַּיִם אֶלָּא לִבּוּן שִׁינַּיִם.

R. Yohanan said: When you show the whites of your teeth to a person (by smiling at them) it’s even better than giving them milk to drink.
This is based on the words (in the blessing to Yehudah in our parashah): “u-le-ven shinayim mei-halav” (Bereishit 49:12). Instead of reading it le-ven shinayim mei-halav (which means, “his teeth are white from drinking milk”), change the vowels a little and read it: libbun shinayim mei-halav (which means, “white teeth—smiling—is better than milk”).

והוי מקבל את כל האדם בסבר פנים יפות כיצד מלמד שאם נתן אדם לחבירו כל מתנות טובות שבעולם ופניו (זעומות) [כבושים] בארץ מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו לא נתן לו כלום אבל המקבל את חבירו בסבר פנים יפות אפי' לא נתן לו כלום מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו נתן לו כל מתנות טובות שבעולם:

AND RECEIVE ALL MEN WITH A CHEERFUL COUNTENANCE. What does this mean? It teaches that if a man presents the most precious gifts in the world to his fellow but gives them with a sullen countenance, Scripture regards him as having presented him with nothing. On the other hand, he who receives his fellow with a cheerful countenance, though he give him nothing, Scripture accounts it to him as though he had presented him with the most precious gifts in the world.

On Giving
You give but little
when you Give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself
that you truly give.

but only to the deserving."

They give that they may live,
for to withhold is to perish.
See first that you yourself
deserve to be a giver,
