“I Feel Like I’m Planting Trees”
Stewardship, wisdom and being like a tree

Stewardship

One day, he [Honi] was walking along the road when he saw a certain man planting a carob tree.

Ḥoni said to him: This tree, after

how many years will it bear fruit?

The man said to him: It will not produce fruit until seventy years have passed.

Ḥoni said to him: Is it obvious to you that you will live seventy years, that you expect to benefit from this tree?

He said to him: I myself found a world full of carob trees. Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too am planting for my descendants.

Vayikra Rabbah and Kohelet Rabbah are compilations of midrash (explanation and legend), on the Books of Leviticus and Ecclesiastes respectively. Both were composed or compiled between the 5th and 8th centuries CE.

Rabbi Yehudah ben Shimon began, "'After the Lord your God shall you walk' (Deuteronomy 12:5). But is it possible for a man of flesh and blood to walk after the Holy One, ??? [For God is like a consuming fire ..

etc].

The Holy One, blessed be He, from the beginning of the creation of the world, did nothing but occupy Himself with plantation first. Hence it is written (Genesis 2:8), 'And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden.'

You also, when you enter into the land, only occupy yourselves with plantation first. Hence it is written, 'When you shall come to the land and plant...' (Lev 19:23)"

When the Holy One blessed be He created Adam the first man, He took him and showed him all the trees in the Garden of Eden, and He said to him: ‘See My creations, how beautiful and exemplary they are. Everything I created, I created for you. Make certain that you do not ruin and destroy My world, as if you destroy it, there will be no one

to mend it after you.

(1)Happy is the one who has not followed the counsel of the wicked,or taken the path of sinners,or joined the company of the insolent;(2)rather, this one delights in GOD’s teaching, and studies that teaching day and night.(3)Such a one is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, whose foliage never fades, and whatever it produces thrives.

(13)The righteous bloom like a date-palm;they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon;(14)planted in the house of GOD,they flourish in the courts of our God.(15)In old age they still produce fruit;they are full of sap and freshness—

(7)His boughs shall spread out far,His beauty shall be like the olive tree’s,His fragrance like that of Lebanon.

(19) When in your war against a city you have to besiege it a long time in order to capture it, you must not destroy its trees, wielding the ax against them. You may eat of them, but you must not cut them down. Are trees of the field human to withdraw before you into the besieged city?

Daat Zekenim is a Torah commentary compiled by later generations of scholars from the writings of the Franco-German school in the 12th-13th century (Ba’alei Tosafot).

(1) for man is the tree of the field.” Assume that this verse had been abbreviated and should have read: “for a human being is like a fruit bearing tree, which you are forbidden to cut down.” How would the fact that this phenomenon occurred while you were laying siege to the city behind this orchard affect you? Just as a human being is meant to produce children, i.e. fruit, so the trees are supposed to produce the fruit for which they have been provided by nature. You must not destroy such trees!

Tree, tree, with what can I bless you?

That your fruit may be sweet--it is already sweet; that you should give plenty of shade--that you also do; that a spring of water may be near you, -even that you have. The one thing left me which I can wish for you is, that all trees planted from your seed may be as fruitful as you are.

The Tree as an Image of Wisdom

The second book of the section in the Hebrew Bible called Writings, Mishlei / Proverbs contains guidance for living a wise, moral, and righteous life, in the form of poems and short statements.

(יג) אַשְׁרֵ֣י אָ֭דָם מָצָ֣א חׇכְמָ֑ה וְ֝אָדָ֗ם יָפִ֥יק תְּבוּנָֽה׃ (יד) כִּ֤י ט֣וֹב סַ֭חְרָהּ מִסְּחַר־כָּ֑סֶף וּ֝מֵחָר֗וּץ תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ (טו) יְקָ֣רָה הִ֭יא (מפניים)[מִפְּנִינִ֑ים] וְכׇל־חֲ֝פָצֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א יִֽשְׁווּ־בָֽהּ׃ (טז) אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים בִּֽימִינָ֑הּ בִּ֝שְׂמֹאולָ֗הּ עֹ֣שֶׁר וְכָבֽוֹד׃ (יז) דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ דַרְכֵי־נֹ֑עַם וְֽכׇל־נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ שָׁלֽוֹם׃ (יח) עֵץ־חַיִּ֣ים הִ֭יא לַמַּחֲזִיקִ֣ים בָּ֑הּ וְֽתֹמְכֶ֥יהָ מְאֻשָּֽׁר׃ {פ}

(13)Happy is the one who finds wisdom,The one who attains understanding.(14)Her value in trade is better than silver,Her yield, greater than gold.(15)She is more precious than rubies; All of your goods cannot equal her.(16)In her right hand is length of days,In her left, riches and honor.(17)Her ways are pleasant ways, And all her paths, peaceful.(18) She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, And

whoever holds on to her is happy

Etz chayyim hi l’machazikim bah...

(13)The righteous bloom like a date-palm;they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon;

Bamidbar Rabbah is a 12th-century midrash on the Book of Numbers.

This palm tree has no waste (psolet) but only dates for eating, branches for rejoicing (in the festival of Sukkot), fronds for covering (the Sukkah), fibers for ropes, small branches for the sieve, leaf stalks for beams in the house.

So are the People of Israel, there is no waste (psolet) among them but rather some who are masters of the Tanakh (Hebrew bible), some are masters of the Mishnah (foundational legal teachings), some are masters of the Aggadah (stories and folklore), some are masters of mitzvot (good deeds and action), some are masters of tzedakah (acts of giving and justice) and every kind of subject.

Psolet = waste, worthless matter

Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi) wrote his commentary in 11th-century France. It is considered to be an essential explanation of the Tanakh and resides in a place of honor on the page of almost all editions of the Tanakh.

The righteous one flourishes like the palm, etc. Like the palm that produces fruit, and like the cedar insofar as its trunk renews itself.

A Seasonal Blessing

On a related topic, the Gemara cites that Rav Yehuda said: One who goes out during Nisan and sees trees that are blossoming recites: Blessed…who has withheld nothing from His world, and has created in it beautiful creatures and trees for human beings to enjoy.

Rav Zutra bar Toviya said that Rav said: From where is it derived that one recites a blessing over scent? As it is stated: “Let every soul praise the Lord” (Psalms 150:6). He explains the verse: What is it from which the soul derives benefit and the body does not derive benefit from it? You must say: That is scent. Even over items from which only the soul derives benefit, one must recite a blessing and praise God.

(2)At four times of the year the world is judged: On Passover judgment is passed concerning grain; on Shavuot concerning fruits that grow on a tree; on Rosh HaShana, all creatures pass before Him like sheep [benei maron], as it is stated: “He Who fashions their hearts alike, Who considers all their deeds” (Psalms 33:15); and on the festival of Sukkot they are judged concerning water, i.e., the rainfall of the coming year.
