(א)שלשת ימים. שִׁלּוּשׁ שֶׁל יָמִים, טרציינ"א בְּלַעַז, וְכֵן שִׁבְעַת יָמִים בְּכָל מָקוֹם שטיי"נא שֶׁל יָמִים: (ב)ויהי חשך אפלה: שלשת ימים. חֹשֶׁךְ שֶׁל אֹפֶל, שֶׁלֹּא רָאוּ אִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו אוֹתָן ג' יָמִים. וְעוֹד שְׁלוֹשֶׁת יָמִים אֲחֵרִים חֹשֶׁךְ מֻכְפָּל עַל זֶה, שֶׁלֹּא קָמוּ אִישׁ מִתַּחְתָּיו – יוֹשֵׁב אֵין יָכוֹל לַעֲמֹד, וְעוֹמֵד אֵין יָכוֹל לֵישֵׁב; וְלָמָּה הֵבִיא עֲלֵיהֶם חֹשֶׁךְ? שֶׁהָיוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאוֹתוֹ הַדּוֹר רְשָׁעִים וְלֹא הָיוּ רוֹצִים לָצֵאת, וּמֵתוּ בִשְׁלוֹשֶׁת יְמֵי אֲפֵלָה, כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִרְאוּ מִצְרִיִּים בְּמַפַּלְתָּם וְיֹאמְרוּ, אַף הֵם לוֹקִים כָּמוֹנוּ. וְעוֹד, שֶׁחִפְּשׂוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְרָאוּ אֶת כְּלֵיהֶם, וּכְשֶׁיָּצְאוּ וְהָיוּ שׁוֹאֲלִים מֵהֶן וְהָיוּ אוֹמְרִים אֵין בְּיָדֵנוּ כְלוּם, אוֹמֵר לוֹ, אֲנִי רְאִיתִיו בְּבֵיתְךָ, וּבְמָקוֹם פְּלוֹנִי הוּא (שמות רבה):

(1) שלשת ימים denotes a triad of days. old French terziane; so, too, שבעת ימים everywhere it occurs denotes in old French a septaine of days (a period of seven days). (2) ויהי חשך אפלה … שלשת ימים — there was darkness of gloom when no man saw another during those three days, and there was moreover another period of three days’ darkness twice as thick as this when no man rose from his place: one who happened to be sitting when this second period of darkness began was unable to rise, and one who was then standing was unable to sit down. And why did He bring darkness upon them? Because there were wicked people amongst the Israelites of that generation who had no desire to leave Egypt, and these died during the three days of darkness so that the Egyptians might not see their destruction and say, “These, (the Israelites) too have been stricken as we have”. And a further reason is that the Israelites searched (the darkness came just in order that they might do this) and saw their (the Egyptians’) jewels, and when they were leaving Egypt and asked them for their jewels, and they replied, “We have none at all in our possession”, they answered them, “I have seen it in your house and it is in such and such a place” (cf. Midrash Tanchuma, Bo 1; Exodus Rabbah 14:3).

(א) וַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל משֶׁה נְטֵה יָדְךָ עַל הַשָּׁמַיִם, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (תהלים קה, כח): שָׁלַח חשֶׁךְ וַיַּחְשִׁךְ וְלֹא מָרוּ אֶת דְּבָרוֹ, רַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ עַל שֶׁלֹא קִבְּלוּ בְּמָרוּת דְּבָרוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עֲלֵיהֶם. דָּבָר אַחֵר, אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לַמַּלְאָכִים, הַמִּצְרִיִּים רְאוּיִין לִלְקוֹת בְּחשֶׁךְ, מִיָּד הִסְכִּימוּ כֻּלָּן כְּאַחַת וְלֹא הִמְרוּ. מַהוּ שָׁלַח חשֶׁךְ וַיַּחְשִׁךְ, לְמָה הַדָּבָר דּוֹמֶה לְאָדוֹן שֶׁסָּרַח עָלָיו עַבְדּוֹ, אָמַר לְאֶחָד לֵךְ וְהַכֵּהוּ חֲמִשִּׁים מַגְלְבִין, הָלַךְ וְהִכָּהוּ מֵאָה וְהוֹסִיף לוֹ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ, כָּךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יִתְעַלֶּה שָׁלַח חשֶׁךְ עַל הַמִּצְרִיִּים וְהוֹסִיף הַחשֶׁךְ מִשֶּׁלּוֹ, הֱוֵי: שָׁלַח חשֶׁךְ וַיַּחְשִׁךְ. וְיָמֵשׁ חשֶׁךְ, כַּמָּה הָיָה אוֹתוֹ חשֶׁךְ, רַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ עָבֶה כְּדִינָר הָיָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וְיָמֵשׁ חשֶׁךְ, שֶׁהָיָה בּוֹ מַמָּשׁ.

(1)“The Lord said to Moses: Extend your hand toward the heavens, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, and the darkness will be tangible” (Exodus 10:21).
“The Lord said to Moses: Extend your hand toward the heavens.” That is what is written: “He sent darkness, and it was dark; and they did not defy [maru] His word” (Psalms 105:28). Our Rabbis said: It is because they did not accept the authority [marut] of the word of the Holy One blessed be He over them. Alternatively, the Holy One blessed be He said to the angels: ‘The Egyptians deserve to be afflicted with darkness,’ and they all immediately agreed as one, and did not defy. What is: “He sent darkness, and it was dark”? To what is this matter similar? It is similar to a master whose servant sinned against him. He said to someone: ‘Go and strike him fifty beatings.’ He went and struck him one hundred beatings, adding some of his own. So, the exalted Holy One blessed be He sent darkness upon the Egyptians, and the darkness added on its own; that is: “He sent darkness, and it was dark [vayaḥshikh].”
“And the darkness will be tangible.” What were the dimensions of the darkness? Our Rabbis said: It was as thick as a dinar, as it is stated: “And the darkness will be tangible [veyamesh],” that it had substance [mamash].

The courage to let go of the door, the handle.
The courage to shed the familiar walls whose very
stains and leaks are comfortable as the little moles
of the upper arm; stains that recall a feast,
a child’s naughtiness, a loud blattering storm
that slapped the roof hard, pouring through.
The courage to abandon the graves dug into the hill,
the small bones of children and the brittle bones
of the old whose marrow hunger had stolen;
the courage to desert the tree planted and only
begun to bear; the riverside where promises were
shaped; the street where their empty pots were broken.
The courage to leave the place whose language you learned
as early as your own, whose customs however dan-
gerous or demeaning, bind you like a halter
you have learned to pull inside, to move your load;
the land fertile with the blood spilled on it;
the roads mapped and annotated for survival.
The courage to walk out of the pain that is known
into the pain that cannot be imagined,
mapless, walking into the wilderness, going
barefoot with a canteen into the desert;
stuffed in the stinking hold of a rotting ship
sailing off the map into dragons’ mouths,
Cathay, India, Siberia, goldeneh medina2
leaving bodies by the way like abandoned treasure.
So they walked out of Egypt.3 So they bribed their way
out of Russia under loads of straw; so they steamed
out of the bloody smoking charnelhouse of Europe
on overloaded freighters forbidden all ports—
out of pain into death or freedom or a different
painful dignity, into squalor and politics.
We Jews are all born of wanderers, with shoes
under our pillows and a memory of blood that is ours
raining down. We honor only those Jews who changed
tonight, those who chose the desert over bondage,
who walked into the strange and became strangers
and gave birth to children who could look down
on them standing on their shoulders for having
been slaves. We honor those who let go of every-
thing but freedom, who ran, who revolted, who fought,
who became other by saving themselves.
