(16) These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to scout the land; but Moses changed the name of Hosea son of Nun to Joshua.
AND MOSES CALLED HOSHEA [THE SON OF NUN JEHOSHUA] — By giving him this name יהושע which is a compound of יה and הושע “God may save”, he in effect prayed for him: “May God save you from the evil counsel of the spies” (Sotah 34b).
(1) ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע, the Torah means that this man was known as a man of valour by the name of Hosheah among the members of his tribe. The fact that he has been referred to as “Joshua” already in Numbers 11,28 is because in his capacity as Moses’ personal valet Moses had changed his name in the form of a prayer asking that he be the instrument of his own salvation and that of others.
ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע, “Moses called (changed) the name of Hoshea to Yehoshua son of Nun. The Midrash Tanchuma, section 6 on this portion, in dealing with this change of name, writes as follows: “what prompted Moses to change the name of Hoshea to Y’hoshua by adding the letter י (equivalent the number ten) to his name? Moses foresaw that Calev, another spy who did receive his ancestral share in the Holy Land received one share, as detailed in the Book of Judges 1,20, seeing he had bothered to make a special detour at Chevron (Numbers 13,22) (“he,” sing. came to Chevron) whereas Joshua, who would lead the people to the Land and conquer it, received ten shares, this was hinted at by the change of his name. [Seeing that Joshua personally did not have any children, looking at the matter technically, although his tribe of Ephrayim, did of course receive their share, perhaps Moses wanted to indicate that he in fact, at least, in the spiritual sense of the word, “inherited” the 10 shares of the Holy Land, that would have become the shares of the other ten spies had they not slandered the land. Ed.] According to the Talmud Yerushalmi tractate Sanhedrin, chapter 2, halachah 6, by adding the letter י at the beginning of his name, so that it began with the two letters spelling the name of G–d, Moses hoped to arm him spiritually against becoming spiritually contaminated by the other ten spies. When Sarah’s name שרי had been changed to שרה, she had lost a letter, i.e. the letter י. Joshua now received this letter. Avraham had the letter ה she had lost, added to his name when that was changed from אברם to אברהם. [Seeing that they both no longer needed these two letters, having died long ago, they were used by Moses as helping Joshua to withstand the brainwashing by the ten spies. Ed.]
ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע, “Moses named Hoseah son of Nun Joshua.” According to the plain meaning of the text his name was changed, as he had been the commander of the army in the battle against Amalek. He had acquired an international reputation as a result of that encounter. Moses changed his name so that he would not be singled out as a target for the Canaanites. After all, they had never seen him, had only heard about him.
And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua [Yehoshua]. [May] God save you [yoshiecha] from the counsel of the spies. One should consider why specifically the name of God [Yah], and why he did not also pray for Caleb. It seems that because he [Moses] told them Go up through the Negev, and the spies said Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev. Rashi explained that this was because the Israelites had been burned [injured] by them [Amalek]. And Moses thought that most likely Joshua would not join in this counsel [of the spies], because on the contrary, he had weakened Amalek and its people by the sword. And for generations from that battle onwards, he [Joshua] was also secure in what was said for a hand is on the throne of God [Yah]: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation (Exodus 17:16). And with that oath that was made using the name of Yah, he would be confident in defeating Amalek. Therefore, Moses added “Yah” to his name so that he would be reminded of the oath that was made with the name of Yah, and for this reason he would not join the counsel of the spies who frightened Israel with [the threat of] Amalek.
Answer: It is true that regarding the trait of piety (Middat Chassidut) I am not speaking, for certainly the trait of piety is for a person to distance himself with every type of distancing that is possible, and especially for one over whose head the treacherous waters have passed. However, by the letter of the law (min hadin), it appears to my eyes as a clear matter that there is no fear of a prohibition in this at all. And even though, on the surface, it would seem possible to bring a bit of proof to prohibit from that which the Tur wrote in Yoreh Deah chapter 197, and these are his words: "It is forbidden for a person to say that he is a Gentile so that they do not kill him, because since he says that he is a Gentile, behold he is confessing to their religion and denying the Principle [God]," up to here [his words]. And the speaker might say that here too, since he calls himself by a Gentile name, it is to him like saying he is a Gentile and it is forbidden; and even if you find it to say [argue] that it is different there, nevertheless there is also in that case a greater elevation [a stronger reason to permit], which is to save himself from death, and even so it is forbidden, so here where it is only for the need of money or another matter, it would be fitting to prohibit.
Answer: Behold, in our country Russia… who was surnamed by the Gentile name Arkady Yefimovich, instead of the Israeli name Aaron ben Chaim. And because of this, they invalidated his election. There arose, by the way, a question: whether it is permitted for a son of Israel to be surnamed and called by foreign and Gentile names from a religious point of view. And according to the announcement of the Hebrew newspapers, this question will be presented before the assembly of rabbis in the capital city of Petersburg for a solution. Therefore, I said [decided] to express an opinion on this doubt.
If we place a penetrating eye upon the names that come in the Book of Genesis, then a precious vision will be revealed to our eyes, that formerly, at the beginning of the development of humanity, their custom was to give names to their sons according to their private occurrences and events…
Behold, we see that the names of the Patriarchs and the tribes of God were many names in the Bible according to private events, which it is superfluous to bring as examples. And therefore, the question [arises] when this custom, which is very ancient, was abandoned, and in its place came a new custom to surname the sons by the names of our ancestors and our relatives, like the custom in these days…
Now, let us see if at any time there was any opposition to foreign names, and if through their surnames there is any betrayal of our religious customs. And behold, on the surface, it is possible that the Jews did not accept with goodwill the names of foreigners, from the famous legend regarding Alexander of Macedon and his meeting with Shimon the Righteous, and the author of the book Yosiphon added from his own [imagination] further, and after him followed the Ravad, author of the Book of Tradition (Sefer HaKabbalah)… that all the children of the priests who would be born in this year in all the cities of Judah and Jerusalem would be called by his name, Alexander. And by this, that author wanted to give a source and reason for the name 'Alexander' in Israel, which had not been heard formerly before the Greeks came to the Land of Israel… However, the genius Rabbi, the diligent critic Rabbi Shlomo Yehuda Rapoport already refuted him in his honorable book "Erech Millin"… and these are his words there: for a long time before Alexander son of Yochanan the High Priest, Greek names are found also among the sages of the Talmud, and Antigonus of Soho is a witness, and it is also said about him that he was called so after the name of the army commander of Alexander of Macedon, up to here are his words…
In Hebrew the word for Name is שם and the word for sould is נשמה. When the outer letters of the word נשמה are removed, what remains is the essence of the soul - the שם. This teaches us that a person's name reflects the essence of his or her soul, as well as his particular mission in this world.
