Try to Praise the Mutilated World
Adam Zagajewski, Translated By Clare Cavanagh

Try to praise the mutilated world.
Remember June's long days,
and wild strawberries, drops of rosé wine.
The nettles that methodically overgrow
the abandoned homesteads of exiles.
You must praise the mutilated world.
You watched the stylish yachts and ships;
one of them had a long trip ahead of it,
while salty oblivion awaited others.
You've seen the refugees going nowhere,
you've heard the executioners sing joyfully.
You should praise the mutilated world.
Remember the moments when we were together
in a white room and the curtain fluttered.
Return in thought to the concert where music flared.
You gathered acorns in the park in autumn
and leaves eddied over the earth's scars.
Praise the mutilated world
and the gray feather a thrush lost,
and the gentle light that strays and vanishes
and returns.

(ב) שבע כפולות
בג"ד כפר"ת
שש קצוות
והיכל הקדש מכוון באמצע
והוא נושא את כולם
(2) Seven double letters,
bet, gimel, dalet, kaf, peh, reish, taf (Begad-Kafrat)
Six directions:
And the holy shrine set in the center-
it bears them all.
-translation by Rabbi Jill Hammer
"If the seven letters are the directions of the universe, and each letter contains both a positive and negative state, then the universe itself contains good and evil, abundance and lack, life and death, by its nature. Suffering therefore is not a mistake, but built into the system. Even though the Creator has made a sealed space within which life can thrive, that sealed space still contains both life and death." - Rabbi Jill Hammer
The Place Where We Are Right
Yehuda Amichai
Yehuda Amichai
From the place where we are right
flowers will never grow
in the spring.
flowers will never grow
in the spring.
The place where we are right
is hard and trampled
like a yard.
is hard and trampled
like a yard.
But doubts and loves
dig up the world
like a mole, a plow.
And a whisper will be heard in the place
where the ruined
house once stood.
dig up the world
like a mole, a plow.
And a whisper will be heard in the place
where the ruined
house once stood.
