Ata Hareita Verses
An examination of where each of the Ata Hareita verses comes from
Ata Hareita "on one foot":
On Simchat Torah evening and morning we read from the Torah. Instead of the usual prayers for taking out the Torah, there is a quilt of mostly Biblical verses that overlaps some but not entirely with the verses in the usual Torah service. This collection of verses is called "Ata Hareita" because those are the first words. These verses are usually sung by different people, with everybody else saying the same verse after the one person. For more about how Simchat Torah came to be a holiday, see: https://voices.sefaria.org/sheets/511742?lang=bi
Why these verses?
As Siddur Lev Shalem puts it, “The Hakafot service begins with a collection of verses affirming God as the center of our lives. We celebrate God’s presence in our lives through words of Torah.” (P. 402)
The Verses and their Origins

(35) It has been clearly demonstrated to you that the ETERNAL alone is God; there is none else.

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Deuteronomy, from a section about how great G-d is. Moses is reminding the Israelites about their experience at Mt. Sinai when they experienced the Presence of G-d and heard G-d's voice.

(4)Who alone works great marvels,—whose steadfast love is eternal;

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Psalms, from a set of verses about why we should praise G-d. Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving praising G-d "whose love is forever". This psalm can be found in the Shabbat P'sukei D'Zimra service.

(8)There is none like You among the gods, O my Sovereign, and there are no deeds like Yours.

Context: Another quote from Psalms. This psalm is asking G-d to listen to us, and this verse is an assertion of G-d's uniqueness. It also is the beginning of the Shabbat morning and Festival Torah Service.

(31)May GOD’s glory endure forever; may GOD rejoice in these works!

Context: Another quote from Psalms. This is from a psalm describing the glory of nature, the world, and all that's in it; all this bespeaks the glory of G-d. This psalm ("Barchi Nafshi" / Psalm 104) is the extra psalm recited on Rosh Chodesh. This particular verse also starts a set of verses prior to Ashrei in weekday and Shabbat P'sukei D'zmira, as well as appears in the verses after Hashkiveinu in weekday Arvit / Ma'ariv. In "Ata Hareita", this is the first of 3 verses all starting with "y'hi" / "May".

(2)Let GOD’s name be blessed now and forever.

Context: More Psalms. This is another one of the verses intended to heap praise upon G-d. This verse is from the beginning of Psalm 113, which is the first psalm in the Hallel service section (and is also at the end of Maggid in the haggadah).

(57) May the ETERNAL our God be with us, as was the case with our ancestors. May we never be abandoned or forsaken.

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of 1 Kings, from the conclusion of Solomon's dedication of the First Temple. It is found in the Haftarah for Sh'mini Atzeret. As we approach the opening of the synagogue ark containing the Torah scrolls, both this verse and the next remind us of the ancient ark containing the tablets inscribed with the words of G-d.

(35)Declare: Deliver us, O God, our deliverer, and gather us and save us from the nations, to acclaim Your holy name, to glory in Your praise.

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of 1 Chronicles, from when David commanded the Levites to praise G-d before the Ark. This verse is the conclusion of a psalm recited when David brought the Ark into a tent in Jerusalem.

(16)GOD is sovereign for ever and ever; the nations will perish from this land.

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Psalms, from a psalm noting that the wicked seem to act freely and asking G-d to take action. Only the first 2 words of this verse are in Ata Hareita (and the Shabbat morning and Festival Torah Service).

(1)GOD is sovereign, and robed in grandeur; GOD is robed, and girded with strength. The world stands firm; it cannot be shaken.

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Psalms, from a psalm about how G-d rules the natural world. This is the Psalm for Friday and is part of the Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat service. Only the first 2 words of this verse are in Ata Hareita (and the Shabbat morning and Festival Torah Service).

(18) GOD will reign for ever and ever!

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Exodus, from the Song of the Sea after the Israelites cross the Sea of Reeds. The present and past tense parts (from the previous 2 verses) are added to this text from the Bible, and together they are found in the Shabbat morning and Festival Torah service, expressing G-d’s eternal sovereignty.

(יא) יְֽהֹוָ֗ה עֹ֭ז לְעַמּ֣וֹ יִתֵּ֑ן יְהֹוָ֓ה ׀ יְבָרֵ֖ךְ אֶת־עַמּ֣וֹ בַשָּׁלֽוֹם׃ {פ}

(11)May strength be granted to GOD’s people; may GOD bless this people with well-being.

Context: Another quote from Psalms. This comes from a psalm about how G-d rules the natural world. We do this Psalm in the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service before L’cha Dodi and when we return the Torah on Shabbat morning. This verse is also at the end of Birkat HaMazon, and it leads to a joke: How do we know that when G-d plays Tic-Tac-Toe with the Jewish people G-d takes the Xs? Because Hashem Oz l’amo yitein (G-d will give strength / O’s to G-d’s people). The Sages interpreted the word “strength” to mean Torah, so this would be “May G-d give G-d’s people the Torah.”
May our words be pleasing to the master of all.
This is not a Biblical verse, but rather a concluding prayer that incorporates words from Psalms 19:15 and 97:5.
The Ark is opened.

(35) When the Ark was to set out, Moses would say:
Advance, O ETERNAL One! May Your enemies be scattered, And may Your foes flee before You!

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Numbers, from a description of how the Ark traveled in front of the Israelites in the wilderness. By having this verse here, it implies that the Torah, placed in the synagogue’s ark, constitutes the Divine strength. When the Divine is present amidst our study and observance of Torah, redemption is possible. This verse is in all versions of the Torah Service after the ark is opened. Note that the Ark was carried into battle as a symbol of G-d’s Presence with the people; when the rebellious people went into battle against the will of G-d, Moses did not let them take the Ark with them.

(8)Advance, O ETERNAL One, to Your resting-place, You and Your mighty Ark! (9)Your priests are clothed in triumph; Your loyal ones sing for joy.(10)For the sake of Your servant David do not reject Your anointed one.

Context: This is from Psalm 132, which describes the entry of the Ark to the tent David erected on Mount Zion (see II Samuel 6:17). These three verses are in all Torah services, after the Torah is returned to the ark before we sing Etz Chayim.

(9)In that day they shall say: This is our God; We trusted in the One who delivered us. This is GOD, in whom we trusted; Let us rejoice and exult in God’s deliverance!

Context: This is from the Biblical Book of Isaiah, from verses describing the Messianic Era. Specifically, it is a description of the day when G-d will restore Israel to its land and make the land fruitful again.

(13)מ Your rule is an eternal rule; Your dominion is for all generations.

Context: This is from Psalms. Psalm 145 is the bulk of the prayer Ashrei (recited three times daily), and this is the Mem line thereof.

(3)And the many peoples shall go and say:“Come, Let us go up to the Mount of GOD, To the House of the God of Jacob; That we may be instructed in God’s ways, And that we may walk in God’s paths.” For instruction shall come forth from Zion, The word of GOD from Jerusalem.

Context: This is from Isaiah again, a part of his vision of the time when all will come to recognize G-d and all humanity will be instructed by G-d’s teachings. Only the last 7 words in Hebrew and 13 words in English are part of the Ata Hareita and all Torah Services.
Compassionate Creator,

(20)May it please You to make Zion prosper; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Context: This is from a Psalm about David’s prayer to G-d. This verse is a plea for the rebuilding of Zion. The yearning for the restoration of Zion is so great that the theme is inserted into many places in the liturgy, even when the subject is quite different. This verse is part of all Torah Services.
For in You alone do we put our trust, transcendent sovereign God -— master of all time.
This is a concluding sentence, not from the Bible.

(4)It has been clearly demonstrated to you that the Lord alone is God; there is none beside Him (Deuteronomy 4:35). Who alone works great marvels, His steadfast love is eternal (Psalms 136:4). There is none like You among the gods, O Lord, and there are no deeds like Yours (Psalms 86:8). May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works (Psalms 104:31). Let the name of the Lord be blessed now and forever (Psalms 113:2). May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; may He never abandon us or forsake us (I Kings 8:57). Declare, "Deliver us, O God, our deliverer, and gather us and save us from the nations, to acclaim Your holy name, to glory in Your praise" (I Chronicles 16:35). [The Lord reigns, the Lord has reigned,] The Lord will reign for ever and ever (Exodus 15:18). May the Lord grant strength to His people; may the Lord bestow on His people wellbeing (Psalms 29:11). We open the ark. When the Ark was to set out, Moses would say, "Advance, O Lord; may Your enemies be scattered, and may Your foes flee before You (Numbers 10:35). Advance, O Lord to Your resting-place, You and Your mighty Ark! Your priests are clothed in triumph; Your loyal ones sing for joy. For the sake of Your servant David do not reject Your anointed one (Psalms 132:8-10). In that day they shall say, "This is our God; we trusted in Him, and He delivered us, this is the Lord, in whom we trusted; let us rejoice and exult in His deliverance" (Isaiah 25:9). Your kingship is an eternal kingship; Your dominion is for all generations (Psalms 145:13). For instruction shall come forth from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3).

(5) [Father of mercy,] May it please You to make Zion prosper; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Psalms 51:20). For we have trusted only in You, King; high and elevated God, Master of the worlds.

We learned in the mishna: One is obligated to recite a blessing for the bad that befalls him just as he recites a blessing for the good that befalls him. The Gemara asks: What does it mean: One is obligated to recite a blessing for the bad just as for the good? If we say this means that just as one recites a blessing for a positive event with the formula: Who is good and does good, so too one recites a blessing for a calamity with the formula: Who is good and does good, didn’t we learn in our mishna that over good tidings one recites: Who is good and does good, while over bad tidings one recites: Blessed…the true Judge? Rather, Rava said: The mishna’s statement was only necessary to instruct us to accept bad tidings with the same joy with which we accept good tidings, not to instruct with regard to which blessing to recite.
