(1) For the leader. A psalm of David. (2) The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky proclaims His handiwork. (3) Day to day makes utterance, night to night speaks out. (4) There is no utterance, there are no words, whose sound goes unheard. (5) Their voice carries throughout the earth, their words to the end of the world. He placed in them a tent for the sun, (6) who is like a groom coming forth from the chamber, like a hero, eager to run his course. (7) His rising-place is at one end of heaven, and his circuit reaches the other; nothing escapes his heat.

(8) The teaching of the LORD is perfect, renewing life; the decrees of the LORD are enduring, making the simple wise; (9) The precepts of the LORD are just, rejoicing the heart; the instruction of the LORD is lucid, making the eyes light up. (10) The fear of the LORD is pure, abiding forever; the judgments of the LORD are true, righteous altogether, (11) more desirable than gold, than much fine gold; sweeter than honey, than drippings of the comb. (12) Your servant pays them heed; in obeying them there is much reward. (13) Who can be aware of errors? Clear me of unperceived guilt, (14) and from willful sins keep Your servant; let them not dominate me; then shall I be blameless and clear of grave offense. (15) May the words of my mouth and the prayer of my heart be acceptable to You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
A hymn of glory to the universe as God's work and the Torah as God's word. In the first half of the poem, the Psalmist speaks metaphorically of creation singing a song of praise to its Creator, a silent song yet one that can be heard by those whose ears are attuned to wonder. But God's word not only gives life to the natural universe, it instructs the human universe, the world we make by our actions and reactions. The Psalmist pours out his praise of God's creation of the world-that-is and His revelation of the world-that-ought-to-be.
Verse 5 [on the words] "Yet their music" "יָ֘צָ֤א קַוָּ֗ם"- literally "their line," perhaps the reverberating of an instrument. Alternatively, it may mean the line marking the boundary- a reference to the order and "fearful symmetry" of the universe.

(3) From the mouths of infants and sucklings You have founded strength on account of Your foes, to put an end to enemy and avenger. (4) When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and stars that You set in place, (5) what is man that You have been mindful of him, mortal man that You have taken note of him, (6) that You have made him little less than divine, and adorned him with glory and majesty; (7) You have made him master over Your handiwork, laying the world at his feet, (8) sheep and oxen, all of them, and wild beasts, too; (9) the birds of the heavens, the fish of the sea, whatever travels the paths of the seas. (10) O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name throughout the earth!

(א) תורת ה' תמימה. גם היא מאירה כשמש כמו שנאמר בסוף הענין מאירת עינים ואומר (משלי ו') כי נר מצוה ותורה אור ד"א ואין נסתר מחמתו ליום הדין וליהט אותם היום הבא (מלאכי ג') אבל תורת ה' תמימה היא משיבת נפש לדרכי חיים ומגינה היא על לומדיה מאותו להט כמו שנאמר וזרחה להם יראי שמי שמש צדקה ומרפא וגו' (שם):
| The law of the Lord is perfect: That too illuminates like the sun, as is written at the end of the topic: “enlightening the eyes,” and Scripture states (in Prov. 6: 23): “For a commandment is a candle and the Torah is light.” Another explanation: | ||
| and none is hidden from its heat: on the Day of Judgment, [as is stated in Malachi 3:19]: “And the sun that comes shall burn them up.” But the law of the Lord is perfect; it restores the soul to ways of life and it protects those who study it from that burning, as is stated (ibid. verse 20): “And the sun of mercy shall rise with healing… for you who fear My Name.” | ||
(ב) עדות ה' נאמנה. נאמנת היא להעיד בלומדיה משיבת נפש. משיבתו מדרכי מיתה לדרכי חיים:

(1) The Law of the Lord : - Why does he join the idea of the Law with that of the sun ? His meaning is, that as the heavens and the sun and the spheres are witnessing to and declaring the glory of God and His wisdom, so the Law and the Commandments which He has commanded His people Israel witness to His wisdom and uprightness, as it says (Deut. 4:8), "(What great nation is there) that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this Law ?" And further he says that as the heavens and the sun benefit the world, and through them the world continues to exist, so is the Law, which is perfect and restores the soul, and upon which (depends) the preservation of the soul as the preservation of the world (depends) upon the sun ; for the soul in the body is as a stranger in a foreign land who has none to help or assist him, for the agents which minister to the body are for the most part such as follow after the appetites, and she (the soul) is as a solitary one and captive amongst them. So also says Solomon, who compares her to a poor wise man (Koh. 9:15). And notice the Law restoreth the soul in that it teaches man the right way and draws him away from worldly desires and from many stumbling-blocks. And notice it restoreth the soul from captivity and confinement to her (rightful) birth and the place of her glory. And David declares in respect of the Law and the commandments and the judgments, their truth and uprightness. Now the Law (תורה, lit. teaching) is the orderly setting forth of the commandment with reference to the manner of its performance ; and this (may be understood) from the general sense of such passages as "I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers (מורי)" (Prov. 5:13) ; "and to teach (להורת) He hath put in his heart" (Exod. 35:34) ; for (the Torah) teaches the ordering of a thing, as "the law (Torah) of the beast and of the fowl" (Lev. 11:46) ; "the law of the leper" (ibid. 14:2) ; "the law of her that beareth" (ibid. 12:7) ; "the law of him that hath an issue" (ibid. 15:32) ; "the law of the Nazirite" (Num. 6:21). Nevertheless the book (itself) is called by the name of the Law (Torah) from Genesis to Deuteronomy, as is written (Deut. 31:9) : "And Moses wrote this Law"; "Take this book of the Law" (ibid. 26) ; (this is) because it narrates the history of Creation and also narrates the affairs of the Fathers ; it likewise sets forth every single one of the things which teach about God : that He is the founder of the world, of His goodness and of the beings created by Him, and His providence in the case both of the good and the evil. He mentions the commandments also - that is, what God commanded (man) to do in the ways of the service of God and love of Him, as of a master who gives commandment to his servant. And the testimony - that is, what was testimony between Israel and God, that they had accepted Him for (their) God, and He had accepted them for a peculiar people ; cf "the ark of the testimony" (Exod. 25:22) ; "the tent of the testimony" (Num. 17:23). For the commandments about which Israel received commands - these are the testimony, and also the tables which had on them the Ten Words, which contain (are) the whole Law entirely ; and these Words were a great testimony to Israel when they saw His glory on Mount Sinai in the thunderings and lightning ; and that great sight was the testimony to them and their children for ever. So also the observance of the Sabbath and the festivals is to them a testimony and a sign and memorial ; the (year of) release also, and the jubilee - all is a testimony to them and their children for ever ; as it says, "for all the earth is Mine" (Exod. 19:5); "they are My servants" (Lev. 25:55). He says : the precepts of the Lord in respect of the commandments of the understanding which God has ordained and put in the heart ; and about these the understanding teaches. He says fear because it is the beginning of the commandments and their root ; for the servant, unless he fear the master, will not do his behests, and perfect fear is in secret. He says also judgments - that is, the rules (that are to be observed) between a man and his fellow. Now it is to be noticed he has mentioned for us all the different kinds of commandments except "statutes" (חקים). The reason is that he applies to them (such epithets as) perfect, restoring the soul, sure, making wise the simple, right, rejoicing the heart, pure, enlightening the eyes, clean, true, righteous altogether, to be desired, and sweet ; all which it is only admissible to apply to the commandments whose reason is clear and apparent ; whereas the "statutes," such as those regarding the eating of swine's flesh and wearing mixed stuffs and the like, whose reason is not clear to all how could it be said of them that they are to be desired, are sweet and pure ? And although they are such to him to whom their reasonableness is apparent, yet this is not apparent to the great majority of men. And he says :
(2) is perfect: - because it is altogether complete ; not one thing is lacking in it of all the things a man needs in this world and in the world to come. And he says :
(4) The testimony of the Lord is sure : - for there is no falsehood in it ; for the Glory rested on Israel in the sight of all Israel, there was none to contradict or gainsay. And he says :
(א) אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי־הָאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר ׀ לֹ֥א הָלַךְ֮ בַּעֲצַ֪ת רְשָׁ֫עִ֥ים וּבְדֶ֣רֶךְ חַ֭טָּאִים לֹ֥א עָמָ֑ד וּבְמוֹשַׁ֥ב לֵ֝צִ֗ים לֹ֣א יָשָֽׁב׃ (ב) כִּ֤י אִ֥ם בְּתוֹרַ֥ת ה' חֶ֫פְצ֥וֹ וּֽבְתוֹרָת֥וֹ יֶהְגֶּ֗ה יוֹמָ֥ם וָלָֽיְלָה׃ (ג) וְֽהָיָ֗ה כְּעֵץ֮ שָׁת֪וּל עַֽל־פַּלְגֵ֫י מָ֥יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר פִּרְי֨וֹ ׀ יִתֵּ֬ן בְּעִתּ֗וֹ וְעָלֵ֥הוּ לֹֽא־יִבּ֑וֹל וְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה יַצְלִֽיחַ׃ (ד) לֹא־כֵ֥ן הָרְשָׁעִ֑ים כִּ֥י אִם־כַּ֝מֹּ֗ץ אֲֽשֶׁר־תִּדְּפֶ֥נּוּ רֽוּחַ׃ (ה) עַל־כֵּ֤ן ׀ לֹא־יָקֻ֣מוּ רְ֭שָׁעִים בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט וְ֝חַטָּאִ֗ים בַּעֲדַ֥ת צַדִּיקִֽים׃ (ו) כִּֽי־יוֹדֵ֣עַ ה' דֶּ֣רֶךְ צַדִּיקִ֑ים וְדֶ֖רֶךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד׃
(1) Happy is the man who has not followed the counsel of the wicked, or taken the path of sinners, or joined the company of the insolent; (2) rather, the teaching of the LORD is his delight, and he studies that teaching day and night. (3) He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, whose foliage never fades, and whatever it produces thrives. (4) Not so the wicked; rather, they are like chaff that wind blows away. (5) Therefore the wicked will not survive judgment, nor will sinners, in the assembly of the righteous. (6) For the LORD cherishes the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.

(20) The LORD watches over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. (21) My mouth shall utter the praise of the LORD, and all creatures shall bless His holy name forever and ever.

(1) Hallelujah. Praise the LORD, O my soul! (2) I will praise the LORD all my life, sing hymns to my God while I exist. (3) Put not your trust in the great, in mortal man who cannot save. (4) His breath departs; he returns to the dust; on that day his plans come to nothing. (5) Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God, (6) maker of heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; (7) who secures justice for those who are wronged, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free; (8) The LORD restores sight to the blind; the LORD makes those who are bent stand straight; the LORD loves the righteous; (9) The LORD watches over the stranger; He gives courage to the orphan and widow, but makes the path of the wicked tortuous. (10) The LORD shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Hallelujah.
(א) הַ֥לְלוּ יָ֨הּ ׀ כִּי־ט֭וֹב זַמְּרָ֣ה אֱלֹקֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־נָ֝עִים נָאוָ֥ה תְהִלָּֽה׃ (ב) בּוֹנֵ֣ה יְרוּשָׁלִַ֣ם ה' נִדְחֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל יְכַנֵּֽס׃ (ג) הָ֭רֹפֵא לִשְׁב֣וּרֵי לֵ֑ב וּ֝מְחַבֵּ֗שׁ לְעַצְּבוֹתָֽם׃ (ד) מוֹנֶ֣ה מִ֭סְפָּר לַכּוֹכָבִ֑ים לְ֝כֻלָּ֗ם שֵׁמ֥וֹת יִקְרָֽא׃ (ה) גָּד֣וֹל אֲדוֹנֵ֣ינוּ וְרַב־כֹּ֑חַ לִ֝תְבוּנָת֗וֹ אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר׃ (ו) מְעוֹדֵ֣ד עֲנָוִ֣ים ה' מַשְׁפִּ֖יל רְשָׁעִ֣ים עֲדֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃ (ז) עֱנ֣וּ לַה' בְּתוֹדָ֑ה זַמְּר֖וּ לֵאלֹקֵ֣ינוּ בְכִנּֽוֹר׃ (ח) הַֽמְכַסֶּ֬ה שָׁמַ֨יִם ׀ בְּעָבִ֗ים הַמֵּכִ֣ין לָאָ֣רֶץ מָטָ֑ר הַמַּצְמִ֖יחַ הָרִ֣ים חָצִֽיר׃ (ט) נוֹתֵ֣ן לִבְהֵמָ֣ה לַחְמָ֑הּ לִבְנֵ֥י עֹ֝רֵ֗ב אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִקְרָֽאוּ׃ (י) לֹ֤א בִגְבוּרַ֣ת הַסּ֣וּס יֶחְפָּ֑ץ לֹֽא־בְשׁוֹקֵ֖י הָאִ֣ישׁ יִרְצֶֽה׃ (יא) רוֹצֶ֣ה ה' אֶת־יְרֵאָ֑יו אֶת־הַֽמְיַחֲלִ֥ים לְחַסְדּֽוֹ׃ (יב) שַׁבְּחִ֣י יְ֭רוּשָׁלִַם אֶת־ה' הַֽלְלִ֖י אֱלֹקַ֣יִךְ צִיּֽוֹן׃ (יג) כִּֽי־חִ֭זַּק בְּרִיחֵ֣י שְׁעָרָ֑יִךְ בֵּרַ֖ךְ בָּנַ֣יִךְ בְּקִרְבֵּֽךְ׃ (יד) הַשָּׂם־גְּבוּלֵ֥ךְ שָׁל֑וֹם חֵ֥לֶב חִ֝טִּ֗ים יַשְׂבִּיעֵֽךְ׃ (טו) הַשֹּׁלֵ֣חַ אִמְרָת֣וֹ אָ֑רֶץ עַד־מְ֝הֵרָ֗ה יָר֥וּץ דְּבָרֽוֹ׃ (טז) הַנֹּתֵ֣ן שֶׁ֣לֶג כַּצָּ֑מֶר כְּ֝פ֗וֹר כָּאֵ֥פֶר יְפַזֵּֽר׃ (יז) מַשְׁלִ֣יךְ קַֽרְח֣וֹ כְפִתִּ֑ים לִפְנֵ֥י קָ֝רָת֗וֹ מִ֣י יַעֲמֹֽד׃ (יח) יִשְׁלַ֣ח דְּבָר֣וֹ וְיַמְסֵ֑ם יַשֵּׁ֥ב ר֝וּח֗וֹ יִזְּלוּ־מָֽיִם׃ (יט) מַגִּ֣יד דברו [דְּבָרָ֣יו] לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב חֻקָּ֥יו וּ֝מִשְׁפָּטָ֗יו לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (כ) לֹ֘א עָ֤שָׂה כֵ֨ן ׀ לְכָל־גּ֗וֹי וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֥ים בַּל־יְדָע֗וּם הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃
(1) Hallelujah. It is good to chant hymns to our God; it is pleasant to sing glorious praise. (2) The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem; He gathers in the exiles of Israel. (3) He heals their broken hearts, and binds up their wounds. (4) He reckoned the number of the stars; to each He gave its name. (5) Great is our Lord and full of power; His wisdom is beyond reckoning. (6) The LORD gives courage to the lowly, and brings the wicked down to the dust. (7) Sing to the LORD a song of praise, chant a hymn with a lyre to our God, (8) who covers the heavens with clouds, provides rain for the earth, makes mountains put forth grass; (9) who gives the beasts their food, to the raven’s brood what they cry for. (10) He does not prize the strength of horses, nor value the fleetness of men; (11) but the LORD values those who fear Him, those who depend on His faithful care. (12) O Jerusalem, glorify the LORD; praise your God, O Zion! (13) For He made the bars of your gates strong, and blessed your children within you. (14) He endows your realm with well-being, and satisfies you with choice wheat. (15) He sends forth His word to the earth; His command runs swiftly. (16) He lays down snow like fleece, scatters frost like ashes. (17) He tosses down hail like crumbs— who can endure His icy cold? (18) He issues a command—it melts them; He breathes—the waters flow. (19) He issued His commands to Jacob, His statutes and rules to Israel. (20) He did not do so for any other nation; of such rules they know nothing. Hallelujah.
(א) הַ֥לְלוּ יָ֨הּ ׀ הַֽלְל֣וּ אֶת־ה' מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֑יִם הַֽ֝לְל֗וּהוּ בַּמְּרוֹמִֽים׃ (ב) הַֽלְל֥וּהוּ כָל־מַלְאָכָ֑יו הַֽ֝לְל֗וּהוּ כָּל־צבאו [צְבָאָֽיו׃] (ג) הַֽ֭לְלוּהוּ שֶׁ֣מֶשׁ וְיָרֵ֑חַ הַ֝לְל֗וּהוּ כָּל־כּ֥וֹכְבֵי אֽוֹר׃ (ד) הַֽ֭לְלוּהוּ שְׁמֵ֣י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְ֝הַמַּ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר ׀ מֵעַ֬ל הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (ה) יְֽ֭הַֽלְלוּ אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם ה' כִּ֤י ה֭וּא צִוָּ֣ה וְנִבְרָֽאוּ׃ (ו) וַיַּעֲמִידֵ֣ם לָעַ֣ד לְעוֹלָ֑ם חָק־נָ֝תַ֗ן וְלֹ֣א יַעֲבֽוֹר׃ (ז) הַֽלְל֣וּ אֶת־ה' מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ תַּ֝נִּינִ֗ים וְכָל־תְּהֹמֽוֹת׃ (ח) אֵ֣שׁ וּ֭בָרָד שֶׁ֣לֶג וְקִיט֑וֹר ר֥וּחַ סְ֝עָרָ֗ה עֹשָׂ֥ה דְבָרֽוֹ׃ (ט) הֶהָרִ֥ים וְכָל־גְּבָע֑וֹת עֵ֥ץ פְּ֝רִ֗י וְכָל־אֲרָזִֽים׃ (י) הַֽחַיָּ֥ה וְכָל־בְּהֵמָ֑ה רֶ֝֗מֶשׂ וְצִפּ֥וֹר כָּנָֽף׃ (יא) מַלְכֵי־אֶ֭רֶץ וְכָל־לְאֻמִּ֑ים שָׂ֝רִ֗ים וְכָל־שֹׁ֥פְטֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ (יב) בַּחוּרִ֥ים וְגַם־בְּתוּל֑וֹת זְ֝קֵנִ֗ים עִם־נְעָרִֽים׃ (יג) יְהַלְל֤וּ ׀ אֶת־שֵׁ֬ם ה' כִּֽי־נִשְׂגָּ֣ב שְׁמ֣וֹ לְבַדּ֑וֹ ה֝וֹד֗וֹ עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ וְשָׁמָֽיִם׃ (יד) וַיָּ֤רֶם קֶ֨רֶן ׀ לְעַמּ֡וֹ תְּהִלָּ֤ה לְֽכָל־חֲסִידָ֗יו לִבְנֵ֣י יִ֭שְׂרָאֵל עַֽם־קְרֹב֗וֹ הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃
(1) Hallelujah. Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him on high. (2) Praise Him, all His angels, praise Him, all His hosts. (3) Praise Him, sun and moon, praise Him, all bright stars. (4) Praise Him, highest heavens, and you waters that are above the heavens. (5) Let them praise the name of the LORD, for it was He who commanded that they be created. (6) He made them endure forever, establishing an order that shall never change. (7) Praise the LORD, O you who are on earth, all sea monsters and ocean depths, (8) fire and hail, snow and smoke, storm wind that executes His command, (9) all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars, (10) all wild and tamed beasts, creeping things and winged birds, (11) all kings and peoples of the earth, all princes of the earth and its judges, (12) youths and maidens alike, old and young together. (13) Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name, His alone, is sublime; His splendor covers heaven and earth. (14) He has exalted the horn of His people for the glory of all His faithful ones, Israel, the people close to Him. Hallelujah.
(א) הַ֥לְלוּ יָ֨הּ ׀ שִׁ֣ירוּ לַֽ֭ה' שִׁ֣יר חָדָ֑שׁ תְּ֝הִלָּת֗וֹ בִּקְהַ֥ל חֲסִידִֽים׃ (ב) יִשְׂמַ֣ח יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל בְּעֹשָׂ֑יו בְּנֵֽי־צִ֝יּ֗וֹן יָגִ֥ילוּ בְמַלְכָּֽם׃ (ג) יְהַֽלְל֣וּ שְׁמ֣וֹ בְמָח֑וֹל בְּתֹ֥ף וְ֝כִנּ֗וֹר יְזַמְּרוּ־לֽוֹ׃ (ד) כִּֽי־רוֹצֶ֣ה ה' בְּעַמּ֑וֹ יְפָאֵ֥ר עֲ֝נָוִ֗ים בִּישׁוּעָֽה׃ (ה) יַעְלְז֣וּ חֲסִידִ֣ים בְּכָב֑וֹד יְ֝רַנְּנ֗וּ עַל־מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָֽם׃ (ו) רוֹמְמ֣וֹת אֵ֭ל בִּגְרוֹנָ֑ם וְחֶ֖רֶב פִּֽיפִיּ֣וֹת בְּיָדָֽם׃ (ז) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת נְ֭קָמָה בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם תּֽ֝וֹכֵחֹ֗ת בַּל־אֻמִּֽים׃ (ח) לֶאְסֹ֣ר מַלְכֵיהֶ֣ם בְּזִקִּ֑ים וְ֝נִכְבְּדֵיהֶ֗ם בְּכַבְלֵ֥י בַרְזֶֽל׃ (ט) לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת בָּהֶ֨ם ׀ מִשְׁפָּ֬ט כָּת֗וּב הָדָ֣ר ה֭וּא לְכָל־חֲסִידָ֗יו הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃
(1) Hallelujah. Sing to the LORD a new song, His praises in the congregation of the faithful. (2) Let Israel rejoice in its maker; let the children of Zion exult in their king. (3) Let them praise His name in dance; with timbrel and lyre let them chant His praises. (4) For the LORD delights in His people; He adorns the lowly with victory. (5) Let the faithful exult in glory; let them shout for joy upon their couches, (6) with paeans to God in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, (7) to impose retribution upon the nations, punishment upon the peoples, (8) binding their kings with shackles, their nobles with chains of iron, (9) executing the doom decreed against them. This is the glory of all His faithful. Hallelujah.

(1) Hallelujah. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in the sky, His stronghold. (2) Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him for His exceeding greatness. (3) Praise Him with blasts of the horn; praise Him with harp and lyre. (4) Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with lute and pipe. (5) Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with loud-clashing cymbals. (6) Let all that breathes praise the LORD. Hallelujah.
