(1) A maskil of Asaph. Give ear, my people, to my teaching, turn your ear to what I say. (2) I will expound a theme, hold forth on the lessons of the past, (3) things we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. (4) We will not withhold them from their children, telling the coming generation the praises of God and God's might, and the wonders God performed. (5) God established a decree in Jacob, ordained a teaching in Israel, charging our fathers to make them known to their children, (6) that a future generation might know —children yet to be born— and in turn tell their children (7) that they might put their confidence in God, and not forget God’s great deeds, but observe God's commandments, (8) and not be like their fathers, a wayward and defiant generation, a generation whose heart was inconstant, whose spirit was not true to God.

(30) None other than your God ה׳, who goes before you, will fight for you, just as [God] did for you in Egypt before your very eyes, (31) and in the wilderness, where you saw how your God ה׳ carried you, as a householder carries his son, all the way that you traveled until you came to this place.

(1) You shall faithfully observe all the Instruction that I enjoin upon you today, that you may thrive and increase and be able to possess the land that ה׳ promised on oath to your fathers. (2) Remember the long way that your God ה׳ has made you travel in the wilderness these past forty years, in order to test you by hardships to learn what was in your hearts: whether you would keep the divine commandments or not. (3) [God] subjected you to the hardship of hunger and then gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, in order to teach you that a human being does not live on bread alone, but that one may live on anything that ה׳ decrees. (4) The clothes upon you did not wear out, nor did your feet swell these forty years. (5) Bear in mind that your God ה׳ disciplines you just as a householder disciplines his son.

(1) And this is the Instruction—the laws and the rules—that your God ה׳ has commanded [me] to impart to you, to be observed in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, (2) so that you, your children, and your children’s children may revere your God ה׳ and follow, as long as you live, all the divine laws and commandments that I enjoin upon you, to the end that you may long endure. (3) Obey, O Israel, willingly and faithfully, that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly [in] a land flowing with milk and honey, as ה׳, the God of your ancestors, spoke to you. (4) Hear, O Israel! ה׳ is our God, ה׳ alone. (5) You shall love your God ה׳ with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (6) Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. (7) Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; (9) inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

(19) I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day: I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life—if you and your offspring would live—

(1) Now, if you obey your God ה׳, to observe faithfully all the divine commandments which I enjoin upon you this day, your God ה׳ will set you high above all the nations of the earth. (2) All these blessings shall come upon you and take effect, if you will but heed the word of your God ה׳: (3) Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the country. (4) Blessed shall be your issue from the womb, your produce from the soil, and the offspring of your cattle, the calving of your herd and the lambing of your flock. (5) Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. (6) Blessed shall you be in your comings and blessed shall you be in your goings.

(15) But if you do not obey your God ה׳ to observe faithfully all the commandments and laws which I enjoin upon you this day, all these curses shall come upon you and take effect: (16) Cursed shall you be in the city and cursed shall you be in the country. (17) Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. (18) Cursed shall be your issue from the womb and your produce from the soil, the calving of your herd and the lambing of your flock. (19) Cursed shall you be in your comings and cursed shall you be in your goings.

(9) You stand this day, all of you, before your God ה׳ —your tribal heads, your elders, and your officials, every householder in Israel, (10) your children, your wives, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to waterdrawer— (11) to enter into the covenant of your God ה׳, which your God ה׳ is concluding with you this day, with its sanctions; (12) in order to establish you this day as God’s people and in order to be your God, as promised you and as sworn to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (13) I make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone, (14) but both with those who are standing here with us this day before our God ה׳ and with those who are not with us here this day.
