In my eyes, the meaning of family planning is planning for a big, healthy family, planning that begins from the very beginning (mi-breishit), and that enfolds within it various spiritual and practical strategies, starting with tefilla, and continuing with a focus on bringing sweet children into the world in health and with gratification. This is actually positive family planning. This does not contradict the natural need for ‘planned’ pauses for periods of time, in accordance with the specific needs of the couple, so that they can raise a family with wholehearted joy.
There is no “correct” or “optimal” family size. What is good for one woman can be beyond the capacity of another woman, and thus beyond the capacity of the family. Once the mitzva of piriyah u-riviyah has been fulfilled, it is necessary to find the right balance for your family’s continued growth…
The mishna teaches: Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon, her limbs become dislocated and her spirit, i.e., her full strength and her regular menstrual cycle, does not return to her until twenty-four months have passed.
Rav Beivai taught a baraita before Rav Naḥman: Three women may engage in relations with a contraceptive resorbent...a nursing woman, she does so lest she become pregnant and her milk dry up, in which case she will wean her son too early, thereby endangering him, and he will die...This is the statement of Rabbi Meir.
One can bring proof from the gemara in Ketubot 39a…In the nursing period there is room to be more lenient with contraception, even for someone who has not yet fulfilled pirya ve-rivya.
If he has not yet fulfilled the mitzva of pirya ve-rivya, but the woman has great physical or emotional difficulty, such as after closely-spaced births…I heard from Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach of blessed memory: “that there is room to permit spacing out intercourse or delaying immersion, and if this is not possible or insufficient, then even through contraceptives, such as pills. But all of this is only for a short period of time and according to the assessment of the halachic authority.”
When I got married, I had four kids one after another. Family planning was not part of my world, I didn’t even think about it. Truth is, I had no idea that it was even a possibility. After four children in four and a half years I felt that I was going to fall apart. Physically, I had no strength left. I went to my Rabbi and asked if it is allowed to take a break. He told me to go and ask a doctor. Whatever the Doctor says – that will be my Pesak. I went to the doctor, and do you know what he told me? He said: four children in four and a half years? Can you imagine what your body has gone through? You must wait three years until your next child! Must, I asked? Must! I went home very happy that day.
In the matter of a woman who gave birth not in the usual way but in a uterine surgery known as a Cesarean section (Kaiserschnitt), one must know that it is a great danger to a woman to become pregnant immediately, before the incision has healed so that the uterus becomes as strong as it was in the beginning, even in the place of the incision, so that it will not be ruptured with pregnancy when the uterus stretches greatly. And the physicians’ opinions differ, some prohibit her getting pregnant for six months and some for a year or more and the truth is that not all women are equal in their natures…We should go stringently regarding concern for danger [chashash sakana], and it is prohibited for her to become pregnant until it is clear that she is healed which is the time [agreed upon] by all the doctors. And this is clear for all women, and we do not apply the principle that a heart knows its own bitterness, which comes up in Yoma 83a that a sick person most trusted regarding himself regarding fasting on Yom Kippur, for that is in the matter of healing from sickness and pain, which is not relevant to the healing of her uterus to the point of being strong enough not to rupture with its expansion from pregnancy…
The Chazon Ish ruled orally (I heard from Rav Avraham Dov Auerbach in the name of a Torah scholar in the name of Rav Greinman [his nephew and student]) that after birth it is permissible to use any contraceptive method, even the diaphragm, in order to space out conception by nine months to a year, even if a woman had no special medical complications, because births close together is also considered a possible danger. Question [Rav Aviner]: If so, perhaps from the outset it is good to wait after childbirth? Response [Rav Auerbach]: It is very possible. The uterus needs a break, otherwise there is concern for uterine prolapse, Also the abdominal muscles need rest and strengthening, and so too the widened veins. For women who have problems like these, it is possible that they must take a break.
From a halachic perspective, there is no doubt that the halacha for miscarriage is like the halacha for any other physical problem, and as long as there is medical justification for pushing off pregnancy there is also a halachic need to do so…Perhaps one should be more lenient and relate to miscarriage as to birth, for from a physical perspective there is no great difference between them, and if Chazon Ish and other halachic authorities found room to be lenient there, because the close proximity of births is in itself a concern for danger—it is possible that it is also permitted according to their opinion to push off the next pregnancy following miscarriage, as after childbirth, and it would seem that this also depends on the point in pregnancy at which the miscarriage took place, and it requires investigation.
Regarding the time of nursing…it seems that pirya ve-rivya is not applicable since most women don’t become pregnant during the nursing period. But [in that case] there would be a distinction in this between women, for there is a [type of] woman whose nature is known that she becomes pregnant after the first year of nursing, and if the mitzva of pirya ve-rivya doesn’t apply until after the completion of the nursing period of twenty-four months, then all women should be considered the same with respect to this, and it requires further study.
What his honor heard from a certain Rav that in Lithuania they would permit all women two years after childbirth is false, for I know of many Rabbanim who were very stringent, and I have never heard that there was someone who would permit it for women in general…
There is no doubt that the woman’s health is a decisive factor, for they said regarding a woman following childbirth “her limbs are loose and she does not return to herself until twenty-four months” (Nidda 9a). And similarly there are other very weighty considerations, such as having other children who require care, etc…And in general, if she feels a need, she can wait about two years from birth until the beginning of pregnancy, but one should not make absolute rules in the matter, and in a case where there is a need for a longer period of time, one should ask a halachic question.
My esteemed teacher and grandfather of blessed memory [Rav Yosef Eliyahu Henkin] further ruled that it is permissible for a woman to prevent pregnancy even for four or more years after childbirth when she needs to care for the child, and he ruled thus in practice several times and did not distinguish between whether the husband had fulfilled pirya ve-rivya or not…And so I continue to rule, and it seems its source is from tractate Ketubot 60 in the baraita: “Our Rabbis taught: A child continues to nurse up to twenty-four months…the words of Rabbi Eliezer. Rabbi Yehoshua says: even four or five years”…They permitted a child to nurse when it is known that a woman who nurses beyond two years sometimes will not become pregnant on account of the nursing, and how could they permit her to push off her husband’s pirya ve-rivya for something that is not a matter of danger? But perforce since it is for the good of the child that he continue to nurse, this is also permitted and included in fulfilling pirya ve-rivya, and through this the words of my grandfather are explained…And if a question comes in, I clarify if the woman wants to practice contraception for the good of the child or to go out to work…And therefore in my humble opinion, [a woman] who is anxious can use contraception for the good of the child in any case for two years if she continues to nurse, even once a day…
As it is taught in a baraita that Rabbi Yehoshua says: If a man married a woman in his youth, and she passed away, he should marry another woman in his old age. If he had children in his youth, he should have more children in his old age, as it is stated: “In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both alike shall be good”
"Descendants of Abraham will cease," is that they only give birth to a son and a daughter.
One cannot argue that it suffices to have two children, a boy and a girl, for they are leaving a replacement for themselves and not reducing the amount of people in the world—because you weren’t created only to desist from causing damage; you were created to build worlds through children and grandchildren, thereby becoming a partner with Hashem in creation.

A man should not marry a barren women, an elderly woman...unless he has already fulfilled the mitzvah of being fruitful and multiplying...
Rav Moshe Hakohen challenged him [Rambam] and said: “Even if a man has fulfilled pirya ve-rivya, it is prohibited for him to marry a woman who is not fertile, for halacha accords with Rabbi Yehoshua, who said ‘if he had children in his youth, he should have in his old age.’” And this is not a difficulty since Rabbi Yehoshua’s words are on a rabbinic level, and Rambam’s here [regarding remarriage after pirya ve-rivya] are regarding Torah law.
Even a couple who have already fulfilled pirya ve-rivya should not practice contraception without a legitimate reason, even with permissible methods, for a person is obligated to continue to procreate based on the parameters of “shevet” and “la–erev.”
For if one has satisfied pirya ve-rivya, he is not obligated to have intercourse at every ona (set interval), rather on account of la-erev it suffices at wide intervals, and there is no need for every ona. And the verse is written thus, “and in the evening you should not rest your hands,” that one should not desist completely.
It seems from his words that it is permissible to do this without a medical reason of danger or great pain, but even for reasons of convenience, livelihood, and the like it is permissible to abstain (though not totally) from intercourse if they both agree. However, it is clear that all this is only permissible if his abstention does not lead to hotza’at zera le-vatala [wasting seed].
This is implied in the language of Rambam, who wrote in chapter 15 halacha 16: “Even though he has fulfilled pirya ve-rivya, it is a rabbinic mitzva not to desist as long as he has strength [ko’ach].” The only desisting that is prohibited is total abstinence. But the obligation is not similar to that of pirya ve-rivya on a Torah level, which would be a rabbinic-level obligation on him to have as many children as possible, for if the obligation to procreate were incumbent upon him for his whole life with no measure, he [Rambam] would not have written language like this…And when [having more children] is difficult, whether for him or for her, even though there is no concern for illness, it is permissible [to abstain from intercourse] when she allows it, in which case he does not have an obligation in intercourse at regular intervals (ona)….if he has fulfilled the mitzva of pirya ve-rivya, as when he has a boy and a girl, they are permitted to skip the days when she can conceive, and to have relations only on days when according to medical opinion she cannot conceive, in which case she will never conceive again and the matter of shevet [continuing to settle the world] will not be fulfilled at all …for we have seen that it is not a full-fledged obligation that the Sages placed upon him…
In the matter of taking contraceptive pills, in a way that there is no danger in taking the pills themselves and with care that the pills not cause her to see drops of blood, if they have already fulfilled pirya ve-rivya and there is an economic reason or another necessary reason, or even if they have not fulfilled pirya ve-rivya, only the woman is weak, she can take contraceptive pills since there is no aspect of hotza’at zera le-vatala.
1. On a Torah level, a man discharges his obligation in the mitzva of pirya ve-rivya with a boy and a girl. However, every additional child is another fulfillment of the mitzva [even if no longer obligatory] and our sages connected it to the verse “In the morning sow your seed and in the evening [la-erev] do not let your hands rest” (Kohelet 11:6). …It isn’t possible to set precise numbers, the matter depends on each individual family, and primarily on the woman’s physical and mental condition…2. The man is the one who is obligated in the mitzva. The woman is exempt…and therefore it is impossible to command a woman to endanger herself and to suffer beyond her capacity. However the woman, by virtue of being a partner to her husband in fulfilling the mitzva, needs to help him to fulfill the mitzva in accordance with what is possible for her. 3. It is difficult to determine for a woman what she can do and what is possible for her. Indeed the matter is given over to her hands and “a heart knows its own bitterness.” With that, in order to prevent erroneous considerations, among which are extraneous tendencies, like trends from outside [our tradition] and imagined needs, one should consult an objective halachic figure who should help a woman with her considerations, to distinguish between convenience and needs, between the demands of halacha on the one hand and the woman’s true capabilities on the other.
